I feel for you too, man. I spent two years of college out in heart of Philadelphia, about a stones throw from West Philly, and not necessarily the city's best side showing, either.
Without a regular subscription coming in from Fur-Fish-Game and the Trapper, I would have gone nuts. Walked down to a local watering hole one night with my buddies, and we saw a possum skirting across a trash-strewn yard. I stood and watched it rummage around for several minutes until it was out of sight. Had a coon another night raid the dumpsters out behind the school kitchen, and I watched it under the alley lights for some time, too.
Even in the midst of what was not habitat by any stretch, wildlife was around me enough to keep my spirits up.
The trade off for the time you spend on your education generally translates to a well-paying career...which of course means you can have some jingle in your pockets to buy toys and pay for hobbies.
It's worth it. Hang in there, get some magazine subscriptions, surf outdoor websits, hit the forums, and you'll get through this next stage of your life just fine...trust me.
