Most bang for my buck? How can I get them all!!!!!
« on: June 15, 2004, 03:50:47 AM »
I am still trying to figure out what to get in order to get the most bang for my buck!

What one or two rifle/shotgun combination will allow me to get the most barrels?

Can you buy just two NEF rifles/shotguns to get all of the barrel combinations? One 12 gauge shotgun, one 30/06 rifle?

Thanks for your help!! New guy here.

Depends on what style of stock you like best for your rifle.

If you like a Monte Carlo style stock for the rifle, it will not work well with a shotgun.  But stocks are rather inexpensive and fairly easily changed.

Some of the guys here like to have one frame with a monte carlo stock for scoped rifle work and one with a straight stock for open sights and shotgun work.

Get a rifle with an "N" or higher as the second letter in the serial number.  For example my NEF rifle is SB2 NS xxxxx.  The N stands for NEF (H for H&R) and the S indicates the year (listed in the FAQ at the top of this forum).  Then you can add any barrel other than the 10 gage shotgun barrles (12 gage Ultra barrel is a 10 gage barrel)

web site for NEF/H&R is www.hr1871.com

I'm not sure exactly what you're asking here.

If you buy ANY centerfire rifle, you can fit ANY centerfire NEF barrel on it except for the 10ga shotgun.  Note, I said centerfire, since you cannot put a rimfire barrel on the centerfire receivers or vice versa.

All you really need is to buy ONE rifle and get the extra barrels later.  It has to go back to NEF for the barrel purchase and initial fitting, after that you swap them yourself.

Is that what you're asking?
God, Family, and guns, in that order!

You can put the shotgun barrels on a rifle frame, but not the other way around, don't put a rifle barrel on a shotgun frame. If it were safe, I would have done it....

I just saw this on the H&R website. It must be new. A 12g smooth bore, 12g rifled slug barrel, a Huntsman barrel and .243 barrel combo.  One purchase and you are set for just about anything.

JohnDY, reread that, when you purchase a combo you only get 2 barrels. They will not sell them with a set of 4 barresl. You must buy a combo then send it in to buy the other 2 and have them fitted, just like having any other barrels fitted to your receiver....<><....

On the combo, it looks like they forgot to put sights on the .243 barrel. If they expect you to use the scope rail, it should come with a lace-on cheekpiece or an extra buttstock.

Stupid me.  I should not just look at the pictures and read the webpage. Still, It would be nice if you could order such a combo from the factory.

If you could, I would like a 20g Ultraslug, 30/30, Huntmans combo. That would cover all my deer hunting needs here in Maryland.

John,
I'm way past need, and well into want! :)
Ridge Runner,
I have always thought I was better off buying each caliber as an individual rifle. The accessory barrel program is a good idea, the cost per barrel about 1/2 to 1/3 the price of a rifle. My problem is when you get the rifle set, and shooting good, you can mess it up changing the barrel. Resale has to favor the rifle, over the barrel.  It costs a bit more to buy a rifle, but I think it's worth it in the long run.
