Weight Help
« on: June 01, 2004, 04:48:11 AM »
I have an Anschutz 1712FWT,  and recently have plopped a 6.5-20x50 VAR III LR scope on it with tall Burris Z-rings.  I love the scope however, I have just recently found out that with this scope and rings on the gun, I am at 8lbs 8 oz.  This is with a electronic handheld scale, with the sunshade off.  I am really worried about being over-weight for the hunter class.  Does anyone have any rings they recommend?  The scope has a 30mm tube, and so all the local places around here have to special order them. I really like the Burris rings, however, I think thats the only place that I can lose weight.

Your help is appreciated.

I put my tall Burris rings into a vertical mill and milled out the bottom portion. You could also drill that area out. Can't remember how much I saved -- think it was about 1.5 ounces -- but those rings are definitely over-kill and can stand to be cut pretty deeply. I can pull them off and weigh mine and let you know what they are now so you can compare if you'd like. (I'm using the high 'Z' signatures -- with the inserts -- for a 1" tube so we'd only be approximating the reduction.)
If you don't have access to a mill, send them to me and I'll cut them for you.

Thanks for the offer Nomad.  I have been thinking about that,  however, I am starting to wonder whether the scope is also over kill?    However,  there is not a lot I can afford to do with the scope between, now and nationals.

Do you have a picture of what your rings look like now? That is something that I may have to play with.

Chunter,

Apologies, I'd love to send a pic but my USB port and my Sandisk card reader seem to have taken a dislike to each other for some reason and them little bits/bytes/megs/pixels/whatever in the camera don't seem to be migrating to files that I can send! (I'm thinking that the engineering folks in Nikonland are still getting even for the way WWII ended.   )

I just set the rings bottom up in the mill vise and took the 'window' down to just short of cutting into the insert cavity. If you wanted to make it look better -- and didn't mind leaving a little more weight -- you could just drill a round 'window' through the pedestal or you could plunge-cut the center and open it to a radius-corner rectangle.

Just wait one gallderned minute here MISTER!

isn't there a rule that state clearly that rings must be factory standard with no modification.  Out of the box if you please!?!?!?  They can NOT be adjusted prior to the ready and MUST be tapered!!!!  If I remember correctly...  they have to fit inside a 4" diameter tube as well.  Finally, when hanging said rings from a Hunter Rifle trigger during tech at a national championship, the trigger must not go off.

lets just be careful about all this willy nilly modification you boys are apt to pursue!   we be awatchin ye...

Davei,

I can understand the factory standard part,  however the rest of your post, I am a little fuzzy on what you are saying.  What do you mean by haning scope rings from my trigger?

Also how does this rule apply to those big skeletal base structures that we see on so many Hunter class rifles that act like a one piece base and raise the scope up about 1 inch off the reciever?  Those appear to be nothing more than a modified base/ring mount to me.  Still see them being used at nationals.  Guess I am confused on whether this just someone pushing the rules or if there is a difference from this versus nomads suggestion.

chunter:  davei seems to have forgotten that those rules apply only during the dark of the moon in months with no "r"s...  You might give BKL rings/mounts a try.  I had to go to them for my 1710 and it saved more than 3 oz over the lightest alternative I could find.  The 2 piece, high, ring/mount combination (don't remember the number...) should put your mind at ease.  You might also check the scale you're using against a known weight in that range.  Sidenote:  Ernie, ya got mail.

Chunter,

One must always remember that Dave is crazy.
With that in mind, most of what he says makes sense, sorta! :-D

(I can't believe that he's getting on me for some of my previous posts...?)

David:
Spoke with a fellow at Beretta the other day and he indicated that, if we keep an eye on the website starting in a few months, we might see a new 'match' trigger for Sakos. I could get no details out of him other than that they recognize the problem and are looking at corrections.

CHunter,
i'm kidding.  and as our excellent friend Senor Nomad has aptly pointed out, i am a bit off to one side of center.

Senor Nomad,
I have tears...  tears i tell you.  what wonderful news about the trigger!
regarding your previous posts...  i am 100% with you.  i like it black and white.  1/2oz is over.  where they can be, i think configuration and weight rules should be accurately and vigorously applied.  is why i like the new hunter rules.  easy to apply and determine.

CHunter;

If you want to drill the ring bases I can help with that.  I've got the equipment and I'm cheap and close to home.  Call me or email me at the work address.

On a different subject, Gary brought the rails up for us to start work on.  They're at the range.

I would suggest taking a look at the BKL rings.  The ones I have used and seen were well made and reasonably light.  Give them a call and I think that they can give you the exact weight of their rings.

There is also and extension ring they make that may help fitting the scope on the rifle (they call it an "offset" ring).

What about removing the mounting pieces for the Sling.  You cant use one anyway.  Get some balsa wood and create a plug and set it with wood glue.  Or fill it most of the way and put an epoxy cap on it.

OR.........  I have never removed the butt plate, but you may be able to remove the but plate and drill a little wood out of the back end, replace the plate.

It sounds as if you only need enough to compensate for your sun-shade.
