Garmin 60C
« on: January 03, 2005, 02:31:10 PM »
I started playing around with my 60C I got for Christmas. It worked well inside last week when we had a cold spell and the sky was clear. Today we have rain and this morning it would only lock onto one satellite inside the house. This evening it locked onto several so I could get a fix. It's a good leaning experience. I'm sure I'll have questions in the future. Dave

Dave, while I don't have a 60c your post reminds me of when I first got my GarminV. I spent all of 2 minutes reading the instruction manual. I then spent the next few weeks just pushing buttons to find out what they do. I then read more of the manual to compliment the info I learned on my own. I think I have a handle on everything I want my GPS unit to do.

Good luck with the 60 and remember to just have fun with it before depending on it for serious (or not so serious) navigation.

The nickname actually came from a girl I used to work with. I drove a truck for a company that delivered water softener salt to homes and retail outlets. This young lady gave two of us drivers nick names, Stevie Monster and Nicholas Monster. Nicholas Monster was a bit unweildy so it got shortened to Nickster. I liked the spelling with an X.

Dave I am glad that you got your 60C out.   I ended up getting the 76C because of the rebate which brought the price below that of 60C.  The two units share the same processor.  I am impressed with the battery life.

I received a combo 12v and PC serial port cable in the mail today.  Some of my older software does not have USB drivers.  Using the new cable I was able to unload waypoints created on my USGS Topo software.  It was not as fast as the USB cable when moving data back and forth using Garmins MapSource Topo software.

The new cable will allow me to have some backlighting on while in my vehicle with gps unit powered by 12v instead of the battery.  The unit receives very good while setting in a vent mount.  I also purchased a right size camera case to carry it in on my belt or from a strap.  I had it in the tracking mode while carrying it in the case.  It created a couple of mile track without any breaks.  Impressed.
There is a learning process to effectively using a gps.  Do not throw your compass and map away!
