Are red dot sights any good? I will be shooting rats at 12 yards, in low light, with my 1377c pistol.
Which one should I get?

They're great!

I've got an UltraDot on one gun and an Adco on another...all cost in excess of $100 and work well. I like the UltraDot outdoors with the filter, but I prefer the Adco indoors.

I was in Wally's yesterday and they are selling BSA red dots for about $30. Don't know much about them but for the price, I'm going to give one a try.

Has anyone used them on a springer? I have a kodiack or a shadow 1000 I would like to try on just not sure if they will hold up!yottey

I don't like them. Got four or five out in my shop. I have tried them on duty weapons(.357 mag., .40 S&W, .41 mag., .44 mag. and .45 acp) and even one of my 1377's. Not as accurate as I like. They work great for combat target shooting(PPC type) but for hitting small targets in low light, I don't like the results. As far as putting one on a springer I don't know if they would hold up to the double recoil a springer produces. Remember springer rifles have put some very high dollar scopes in the trash bin with their recoil. We're talking scopes that will stand up to the recoil of .375 H&H and bigger rifles. Lawdog

I just bought the bsa red dot sight for 49.99 at Big 5,and I like the results. Very easy to sight in and use. I'm shooting some small groups at 12 yards,that should get rid of the rats. This is the same sight that comes with the Gamo Shadow 1000,but I would not try it on the Kodiak.
The sight probably is not that grate when shooting out of 20 yards,to get the best is to get a UltraDot($120) but for me its fine.

Some models are specific for Weaver bases and/or rimfire dovetail mounting, so look closely before you buy.
I put a $9.00 daisy model (don't laugh, it was all I could find) on a little .22 for my 6-yr-old. It is not exactly a high quality instrument, but he hits much better with it and it has been lots of fun on cans and swingers at 25 yards. It will not last forever, and we will probably upgrade it to a real red dot.

A friend of mine mounted a relatively inexpensive Tasco Pro-Point 2 on the slide of a 45 ACP 1911. The sight actually cycles with the slide itself. The sight has held up remarkably well. I would consider this a pretty substantial test of durability. I would not be afraid to mount one on a spring piston air rifle. I am considering installing one on my R7. As for accuracy with a red dot - I use red dots on my target pistols for 50 yard bullseye shooting with very good results.
