I have to be frugal for a while, and I am looking for some of the cheap stuff that will give "COYOTE" accuracy out to 200 yards MAX. Most likely all shots will be 100-125 yards. I just cant afford the expensive $tuff right now. :roll:

Tacshooter, many are reporting excellent accuracy with the Winchester "Valu Pak" 45 grain hollow points. I used to shoot them a lot in my Ultra and in my AR15 and experienced very good accuracy, despite the fact that the AR has a 1 in 9" twist barrel.

They are pretty inexpensive at about $11.00/ box of 40. This was the last time I bought a box about three years ago (I shoot reloads only now).

Not having done alot of handloading for my NEF 223 out of more than a half a dozen or so factory loads..Wolf 62 grain shot the best in my rifle!!

Can't get much cheaper than that!! Also the heavier wt.bullets arn't suppose to do that well in the NEF barrels...go figure

Try the Ultramax if you can find them; they have several loads from 40gr NBT to 55gr PSP for about $12-$18 for a box of 50, and they shoot better than the Win valu-paks.

I may try the 60 or 62gr rounds; I stayed away from them because of the slow twist, but have found a few people who said they shoot very well.

Also, does the Wolf ammo gum up the breech of your rifle? Extraction was a problem for me when I first got mine, but polishing it by hand fixed the problem; no sticks in close to 1000 rounds since then.

tac - I don't know what barrel you are shooting but I went out with a 24" bull barrel yesterday that had never been fired and that I had just received. Had cleaned this barrel really good with Shooter's Choice and Flitz, purchased a suede leather sandbag rest, and some of the UMC 55 grain factory loads and the Win Varmint Pack 45 grainers. I sighted in with the UMC at 50 yds. took 14 rounds to get in the bull, but I think that is more about the optics (BSA 3-12x50) than the barrel or even my abilities. Moved out to 100 yds. and put 3 in a 2" circle still with the UMC. Put in several of the 45 grainers after this and didn't get in the bull. If I had sighted in with them in the first palce perhaps I would have. But here's the kicker....$3.36 for the UMC 20 count box and $12.87 for the Win Varmint Pack 40 count box.....you do the math. There was one UMC that hit dead center at 50 yds. The backboard I was using was a peice of 3/8" formica top...it completely exploded the 2" bull. No tumbling of these rounds either. You make the choice for yourself, but as for me I think I'll stay with the UMC for a while. If 'yotes don't fall after being hit by one then I'll think about trying something else. And at $3.36 a box I can afford some fun and inexpensive plinking time too.

Am working on some hand loads right now. I use the Win White box for control. For inexpensive (not the cheapest but least expensive), repeatable, accurate and explosive varmint rounds there is no question, go with the Winchester White box. It is hands down an incredible 223 load in my NEF and as Wlscott said in my AR, it is just darn near impossible to beat.

About the Wolf, will it extract from a NEF. I had hell with mine and sent it back to factory, do not EVER want to go there again. Does the lacqure plate out in the chamber?

MarkA... I have not really done any handloading for the .223 NEF although I have shot some reloads in it . I really have not shot the rifle all that much. I did have the usual ejection problems that is discussed so much but not as bad as in a .308 barrel that I have. ( I finally rechambered it to the .307 Winchester that has a rim!)I polished out the chamber and so far (knock on wood) the problem has dissapeared. The lacquer on the Wolf is not a problem in the NEF...Nor is it in a Bushmaster carbine that I blaze away with using the stuff. There are guys I know that go thru cases of it in full auto M-16's that don't have problems with the lacquer. I'm not saying it has never caused a problem in some guns...I just don't personally know of any. Wolf has now replaced the lacquer coating with a polymer anyway soooo. Ya never know with these guns..I just may be the owner of the only .223 NEF barrel in Texas that likes the stuff....

Just posted on the SS109 topic.

I've tried the Wolf in 55gr.HP. and they shoot pretty darned good for cheap stuff. Out of my ultra, they hold around two inches at 100yds.
And like I posted on the other topic I'll probably buy bulk soon.
Sportsmans Guide has them for $2.35/20 or $26.57/240 rnds.
IMHO they're a good buy.
