Salmon ran last Monday.

We had a great run of salmon last Monday, 28 June, at Pacifica pier, California. I was not there unfortunately. But they say they pulled out about 200 legal size for the day there. I went there Wednesday and can off with only a small king fish but it was a pan fryer size and tasted good just the same.

My brother inlaw lives in Pacifica, and I've walked on that pier more than a few times,as well as down the beach. I live on Vancouver Island, BC. We mainly troll for salmon, I picked a nice one up yesterday- 35-40 lbs, lost another at the boat, maybe in the teens.Wehave to use barbless hooks  so how you play them makes the diferance- any slack and they're gone.

I know what you mean. Two week later a guy snagged a salmon by the tail and as soon as it hit the deck of the pier the hook came out.

When we got the net under the one we landed- the line broke right at the anchovey holder, one second earlier and he would have broken off.I think what happens is whenthey initially strike, their tooth may graze the line and in the ensuing fight, that abrasion wears theline which is under tension.Thats also why we change hookups after each fish- you can't be sure there isn't a nick in the line.Too many guys just bait up and get the gear back in the water and try for another one..That's the little stuff that can make the diferance between a fish in the boat and the ''big one that got away''

You sure got that right.   A new leader is a small price to pay.   I tie up several before I go out and change every time I catch a fish.   I save the hooks and re-sharpen them and tie on new leaders between trips.   New leader and a sticky sharp hook can make all the difference between fish in the boat and getting skunked.

The kings are starting too move through the Sound now and the Silvers are usually available most of the year.   We also get Sockeye and Humpies too.
