Okay, so being new at this reloading thing, I can expect to make a mistake or two, right? Well, here is a good one. I have been using a Lee Collet Die to neck size my .223 cases so that I don't have to do a full resize on my cases. So, I did this with about 25 of my cases, re-primed them, and then tonight, I sat down to fill them with charges and seat the bullets. Well, when I got the first case in the shell holder, and I set the bullet in the case mouth, it slid right in! Apparently, I hadn't screwed in my collet die in tight enough to cinch the case tight, and the case mouths were too wide. So, using a bullet to check for tightness, I found that 20 of my 25 cases had this problem. So, here is my question. Can I safely de-prime those cases without a primer going off, or should I just toss the cases? If I can just de-prime the cases, can I re-use the primers? I really only care about salvaging the cases and re-sizing the necks, and if I can do it, I would like to. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Just resize the cases...you don't have to remove the primers.  (But you do have to remove the bullets...)

You can easily remove the decappping pin from all resizing dies.  This is what Steve failed to mention.  

Simply reomove the decapping pin, resize the cases, and replace the pin.  Presto Chango, you have primed, sized cases ready for powder.  

I've even done this with pistol caliber cases after loading cast bullets and realizing that my mouth expansion was so aggressive that they wouldn't chamber in my revolver.  A quick and gentle trip into the sizing die solved that problem quickly.

Loki_762, I'm no expert I learn new things here all the time but I have used the Lee collet die for quite awhile.  If you take the pin out the collet will not have anything to form the neck around. You may end up with some very tight necks. One thing I can pass along to help that die work easier, is to take it apart and clean between the petals of the collet every 100 rounds or so and put a SMALL amount of grease where the collet bears against the taper of the case. Just check to make sure the grease dosen't get to where it can get on your brass. LouisV

Thanks Louis V. That explains some problems I had when I resized some primed rounds without the pin! Normally I do love the collet die. it makes for accurate ammo.

I just reread my post and realized that I didn't make it clear to put the grease where the top of the collet rubs the DIE case not the shell caseing. Your welcome MnMike. Just glad I could give information instead of just asking for once. LouisV
