Best distance to sight in?

Hello,

I have a new shooter who has a scope without target knobs; just a plain ol' rifle scope. Of course there will be some hold over/under on just about each animal. But since I have no expereince shooting like this (I LOVE target knobs) I have to ask for some help on this one. What's the best distance to use for zero? My guess would be to zero at 50 meters. That way the hold should be just about dead on for chickens and pigs. However, with all the bullet drop past the pigs there will be lots of hold over and the odds of success diminish. Would it be better to zero on the turkeys or rams? If so, how much hold over/under would be needed for the other animals?

I had to shoot a rifle this way for a while.  Zero'd on turkeys (77m). Rams - aim about 1" over the back, Pigs - aim for the window between the legs and chickens level the horizontal cross-hair on the rail. Depends on gun and ammo.

There are some variables involved. Try different ones and see what works best.  A pig zero worked good once for me.  shot pigs and chickens center and turkey just over the back and rams top of the horn.
