Rock Island .45 new sights (pic's)
« on: October 24, 2004, 03:46:10 PM »
Played with my Rock Island today.. installed a set of Millett 3 dot sights

These are a great improvement ... and cheap .. $39.95 for the set from
my local shop..

The rear sight taps right in the dove tail, and the front ine is staked on
easy to remove and replace..if you have a staking tool.. a punch will work
is one is not avaliable..

THat's Great!

I just bought a Rock Island 1911 today from Sarco.  Can't wait to get it.  It'll be my first 1911, and I've read so many great things about this handgun, for $288.50 shipped, I had to get one.

you are going to love that RIA .45  granted it not a Gold Cup Colt
but well worth the money..  These are excellent big bore plinker pistols
I also in addition to adding the 3 dot sights had a friend who used to
build target grade .45's do a trigger job on my RIA .. he brought the trigger pull down to a nice chrisp 3 lbs that breaks like glass..
all it took was a little polishing and stone work..

RIA .45

Good Grief!!
At this price, how come we (I) haven't heard more about these pieces?

How do they perform?  I watched a guy next to me at a Dallas indoor range this weekend use a Kimber .45.  I ran out of time to get to that or a similar model to try out (I was "shopping" aka  "try before I buy").  I was impressed with what he was able to do with it and the hole it left.  But, when I checked it out in the shop on my way out, the style of safety and the price had me a little more than cautious.

This RIA 1911 appears to have a similar center pivot safety from the pix.  Am I seeing it clearly?  If so, is this the similar "hammer back" safety style of the Kimber?

For such a price, I could sell the Beretta and get 2 of these (one for each hip) and have money left over  :P  :)

Seriously, not knowing much about them but what I've read here, are they reliable and durable...enough, even,  to pack into the woods?

Looking at the frame design, CTC should make a laser grip sight for them correct?

Would appreciate hearing about your experiences from you folks that have had them for a while.

Thanks in advance.

Got my RIA and WOW... what a fine solid firearm!

It shoots my cast boolit hand loads flawlessly, and I'm grouping 2" at 50 yards.

The trigger pull was a little stiff for my needs, so I took it to a friend who is a custom 45 smith.  His words were.. "I'm impressed".  I had him do a trigger job and now it breaks crisp at 4 lbs.  He also showed me a part that he uses in his custom jobs, and was shocked they had that in the Rock Island.

This gun is as fine as any $800 1911 I've looked at, and I'm glad I waited to buy this one..
