.25-06 FOR VARMINTS AND PREDATORS
« on: June 15, 2004, 03:55:19 AM »
I want to start using my .25-06 (Remington Classic) for shooting woodchucks, coyotes, and other varmints here in Michigan. Does anyone else here use a .25-06 for such? Any suggestions on loads?
I currently use this rifle for deer hunting and have a 3-9 x 40 scope on it now. I'm thinking of adding a bipod and maybe a higher power scope as well.

UMFAN1,

I am a long time fan and user of the .25-06.  Been using them since before Remington adopted it and gave the .25-06 their name.  For varmints the .25-06 is about as big as anyone would ever want to go.  A little on the over kill for Ground Squirrel size critters but using the 75 or 87 gr. bullets will make a nice mess.  If you would like some load information(both varmints and deer) drop me an e-mail at lawdog_gary@yahoo.com(there is an “_” between the lawdog and gary) and I would be glad to send you some.  Small groups and tight lines to you.  Lawdog

Umfan1,
Like Lawdog, I was useing the 2506 way before it became a factory load.
And yes its one heck of a varmint gun but, Its also a good deer and
pronghorn. the 2506 got its srart back in the twentys with guys like
Niedner, whelen to mention a few. I will always have a 2506 and a 257
some where in my stash. I don't think you can go wrong with this round.
Good luck to you Sir..............Joe..............................................

Like the others said, it's definately a great round.

If you're planning on saving fur though, I'd suggest you use a smaller caliber.

Sorry I forgot that you asked about this.  The smallest scope I have on any of my .25-06's is a 4-16X 44mm Burris on my Ruger No.1.  My Rem. M700 BDL Varmint has a 6-18X Redfield on it and my favorite .25-06 is my Ruger M77 V(older model tang safety) wears a 6-24X 50mm Burris.  Nice to have the added magnification when aiming at small critters at longer ranges.  Small groups and tight lines to you.  Lawdog

Thanks for your input Lawdog. I'm leaning towards a 4-14x now.

Varmint_master,
If you can hold out you will be more than happy with the 257WBY, Mag.
I have been very happy with mine, Shot every thing from p-dogs to deer with it, Its a little rough on varmints, Tough to patch up, Some times you can't find all the parts to make them whole again. I've taken p-dogs out to over 300 yds with no problem. Good luck finding one........Joe.............

I use a 270.  I like the Hornady Vmax bullets a lot.  Mucho "terminal performance", keyword being "terminal".
