IDPA revolver - S&W 686+ ?

I know the fastest IDPA revolver is one that uses moonclips for fast reloads. Problem is the S&W N frames are a little big for me. They are a little hard to handle weak hand only. I really like the L frame S&W revolvers. (I know S&W made a 686 in .38 super with moonclips. I don't know if they are still available. But I figure why carry a 6 shot .38 super when you can carry a 7 shot .357 magnum? I'm also set up for reloading .38 special/.357 magnum and really don't want to start all over with another caliber.) So I want to try my 686+ this summer for IDPA. The rules are you can only load 6 shots in a revolver for IDPA. Anybody else use a 7 shot revolver for IDPA? Have you found a way to reload quickly, with the empty chamber under the hammer so you don't waste time trying to shoot the empty chamber?

remember you will need a 4" barrel.   I have a 627 N frame(moon clips}  A 646 L frame(.40 S&W  w/moonclips)    a Mod 19 K frame (speedloaders)

I have shot all of the above in IDPA includig a Kimber Custom Stainless and a PRO Elite.

 I think the moon clips are a pain in the ass, loading and unloading. Also on the 627(8shot) hard at times to get in cylinder. Time wise I have the best luck with Speedloaders so I use my Mod 19. Ther is just something about pulling out a nickled 19. Kinda like Cowboy action shooting.
 The place I shoot at , the courses of fire, are revolver friendly, hence 6 shot stages.
Although I do shoot my .45's my Mod 19 is my favorite and I am most accurate with it..................................

So I  don't always "follow'  the sequence of shooting ( why should I shoot 1 to the body when I already put my first shot in the head?}

I personaly think some of the senarios and rules  in IDPA are CA-CA..   BUT IT IS ALOT OF FUN.....OTTO

Not to change the subject but how do you like your .40 and where did you get it. I have seen several on the auction sites and I am considering one for concealed carry. Does yours have the titanium cylinder? How much does it weigh?

I bought my 646 from a friend who has a gunshop. I paid $512 out the door.  It does have the Titanium cylinder.  It is quick to point and extremely accurate. S&W only made 900 and something. It DOES NOT have the internal lock so I jumprd on it..........................................OTTP

Choose the revolver you like and have it machined for moon clips. J, K, L, and N frames can be done in all calibers.

Chris, You are correct for stock class. Open class revolvers are OK with this conversion.

Nope, IDPA has catagories for revolver and semi-auto.  Each is divided into further classes;  can't recall exactly what they were, though.  But I think the laser sight might be a no-no.

Come to think of it, I do have my new M92 Compact.....Hey!  Where's a match around here?
