model 100 jamming
« on: February 08, 2004, 10:33:38 AM »
I'm just back from the range.  I inherited my dad's pre 64 model 100 in 308.  I had the warrantee work done on it and mounted a 3X9 Scopechief scope on it.  I had the rifle checked out by the gunsmith when he did the warrantee work on it.  It was shooting well enough at 100 yards but after about 10 to 15 rounds it jammed twice.  The empty casing didn't eject properly so I had to get them out manually.  Is this a common problem with the model 100?  Can it be fixed?  The rifle has sentimental value and I was hoping to use it for deer, but jamming problems would make me hesitant to take it out.  Thanks.

I have one of these that I keep for the same reason as you.

The jamming is not a common problem. These models are somewhat prone  to rust on the action under the forearm part of the stock. Take the stock off and I think you'll see what I mean. Clean it up good and lightly oil the mechanism before you put it back together. That should solve your jamming problem.

It's a fine old deer rifle in my favorite caliber. I've taken several deer with mine over the years.

This is a common problem with a 100. There was a "specialist" in PA that worked on them. A friend sent his father-in-laws 100 to him and it still jammed the way you describe after the work.

koivu,
I would try the cleaning suggested. If that does not do it, I would recommend contacting Winchester. There were some recalls and service bulletins issued for the Model 100 quite a few years ago, and with serial number information Winchester may be able to help you. Good luck.

Sometimes it's just the magazine that causes the jamming but you said it was failing to eject the fired case. Have a gunsmith check the ejector. My brother has had to replace his in my dad's old rifle. Don't take the stock off that rifle unless you know how. You have to take it off while the rifle is cocked and the bolt pulled back. Do not snap the rifle while removing the stock or it locks the stock to the rifle. The gas rod does rust up and you needs to be cleaned and lubbed, they make the stainless ones but may be hard to find. I have one but don't use it much. It was used 2 years ago and took 5 deer and it will jam sometimes but mine is a feeding problem, probably the clip.

As AAA mentioned, be careful VERY CAREFUL when removing the stock.  It can be very very tricky to do so and you might bust the stock if the bolt slips during the process.
The model 100 is a strange looking bird without the stock on.   The action is somewhat complex to tear down and reassemble.  I have the schematics on it, if you need them let me know.

Most likely the ejector, have to remember the 100's are 40 years old round-a-bouts.   They need some TLC.
