Barnes "X" 350/450gr for Ruger #1
« on: June 13, 2004, 10:20:37 AM »
New to board, and have enjoyed cruising the post.
Just purchased a Ruger #1 for shooting the Spire point bullets. Barnes shot me down, stating "Velocities will be too low for proper performance" Can you Barnes shooters enlighten me in re to what has worked for you?
Thanks

I assume you're loading the .45-70. Barnes is right....not enough velocity to open the X bullet. Try the Barnes originals. Or, you might try slightly enlarging the hollow point.....works sometimes.

The Barnes 350 gr. X bullet opens up quite nicely at velocities over 1,600 fps., which most that own .45-70's will tell you that is easily done.  I have no problem shooting the 350 gr. Barnes X bullets out of my .450 Marlin(which as most will tell you is the ballistic twin(maybe a little better) to the .45-70.  Barnes is making that statement because of the legalities involved due to the fact that some are still using the old trap-door Springfield’s.  These great old rifles just won’t stand up to the pressures created by most modern loads.  I would be willing to bet many .45-70 users achieve velocities above 1,600 fps. with their reloads.  Small groups and tight lines to you.  Lawdog

Bummed.................

Seems my rifle (New #1) is of the “Short throated variety” I was alil bummed out not being able to load short of the cannelure on some new hard cast bullets I had purchased. I actually had to seat nearly .125” past the cannelure to get the darn things to seat in the chamber!
Oh well, my hunting buddy just ordered a truck load of Hornady 350gr (77 lbs worth) and has offered to split them with me….. The Ruger does like those, and at 2100fps the Limb Saver pad cant be far down the road.
Lawdog, I’ll keep you posted re: Load development with the Barnes stuff, the pointed bullets were the reason I purchased this rifle anyway.
To all a great day!
Tom

I had short-throat trouble, too. I had to use a throating reamer to lengthen mine .250 and now they work just fine......no overly deep seating. I think 6mm is the minimum throat increase needed.

I just installed the Limb Saver pad, It's a good looking addition to the rifle (it has to look better than a wash cloth taped to the stock)
Anyway, old mister soft shoulder is headed out to the back 40 to try it out. Will write back with my eval. (if I still have the use of my right shoulder after 20 rounds)

Shoots great, the new pad turned it into a girls gun!
The rifle is sub MOA with the Hornadys........ I don't think I'll shoot/load anything else for a while.
Have a good one!
