I have to agree with you on most counts, but there is an alternative to the meat loss problem. I've shot several with the CCI or Federal speer hp bullets, it's constructed with a thicker jacket and doesn't expand violently(explode) like the Vmax bullet. It leaves holes pretty much like a 22Lr in squirrels. My longest kill was at 158yds through the boiler room, the exit wound looked just a bit larger than the entrance hole. I haven't shot anything bigger so I don't know their performance on rabbit size critters, although I have seen posts by several varmint hunters "claiming" one shot kills on yotes at well over 100yds. I also saw a dead bobcat killed by 1 shot from 40 yds, cat was hit broadside just behind the shoulder with a Vmax 17hmr. It died on the spot, which I thought was pretty impressive considering cats tend to be pretty tough to kill. As far as cost, I shop and get the ammo on sale, usually pay $7 to $7.50 a box of 50 out the door. From what I understand, premium 22mag ammo is not much cheaper, but I've never owned a 22mag, either. I guess it all boils down to what you'll do with the rimfire. For over a year I was a skeptic concerning the 17hmr, but after my hunting partner of 35 yrs talked my into buying a 17hmr and shooting it, I now own 3 of em! a Marlin 917V with a Mueller 8.5-25x50, a 917VS with a S&W 4-18x42 and a CZ452 American with a Bushy Elite 4200 4-16x40, and I love em all. I bought the 917V first, liked it, wanted another so my son and grandson could shoot with me so I looked for a CZ452, no one had one so I bought the 917VS. A couple weeks later I was shopping at Sportsman's Warehouse, they had just received 3 CZs and I had to have one after handling it. So I ended up with 3 of em, can't convince myself to sell one, so I kept em all! Shoot straight and keep em in the 10 ring. Tim
