You could try Pedersoli as they have the Mortimer Target Rifle or the Tryon rifle which is as accurate as a target rifle.  Then there is Track of the Wolf where kits with Targt barrels are available.  And I'm sure Dixe has their share of target rifles.  This is the tip of the cake.

Can't help with the rifles, but if you want a serious target pistola you might consider the HEGE-Siber.  That's how I went and they really shoot - win most of the European matches.  Lots of engraving, including the barrels and high grade checkered wood.   Rob a bank first though.

I shot my first Muzzle Loader last week-end, and I just wanted to get a good first rifle.  If I need to build it, that would be alright too.  But where do I start?  Where do I find out what I need?  Thanks for any help, or should I go somewhere else to ask?  Again, Thanks.  Mike.

Hi, Mike. Welcome aboard. There are a number of fine production target
rifles out there. The Pedersolis are good. Dixie Gun Works carries most of them. Just type Dixie Gun Works into your browser window and you're there.
Same with Track of the Wolf. They offer first-rate parts that you can use to build a great rifle with. They have a selection of premium target sights available, too. The folks at Track are great to do business with.
Before you make a choice, you need to be sure what kind of target shooting you'll be doing, as it can get very specialised. The best way to get started is to talk to the shooters at the range you'll be using and see
what they have to say. One of them may even have a decent rifle for sale.
You can also check the on-line auctions like GunBroker.com and auctionarms if you feel you know what sort of rifle you want. Hope this is of some help to you.

sorry grandpa mike if you think me rude,,but as free as it is I checked your other 150 posts here at GB's and thought you knew somthing about shooting.

hand loading is the essance of target shooting black powder muzzle loaders,,as well you know. The question you post here is as easy to answer as all the others,,"What's the best shooting gun?". Can you answer that??

welcome to bpml..it's really the most fun after ya read all the books and center fire get's boring,,,,,,the old skill is the next adventure too enjoyment, and true talent,,

if your looking for entry level,,GPR,,,and then there is "life" after that,,Can ya hit a 2" circle "off hand" at 50yrds holdin  10#'s a steel and wood??(5 tymes?)
try that and tell me how "easy" it is,,, we'll hep ya get that far..,,,,,,,

As everybody before me has stated, welcome to black powder and hope you find the answers you need.  Most everybody has told you the best places and I am sure you can find a good rifle suited to your tastes and price range.

The other part is up to you.  A good target rifle needs the right loading technique, powder, patch, patch lube, cap, and ball in order to work well.  Each rifle is an individual.  Only testing will tell you what will work best.  That's where the fun comes in.

Best of luck in your endeavor,

Crow-Feather

Last weekend I was driving in West Virginia about 4 hours from home.  Ran across a sign in a small town (Maysville) that said Black Powder Match Today.  Since I wasnÂ’t in a hurry to get anywhere I dropped in to watch.  The rifles used were all percussion, ball only, no in-lines, open sights only.  They shot at 100 yd, off-hand and rest, 50 yd, off-hand and rest, 25 yd off-hand, also 25 yd pistol off-hand.  All were 5 shot groups.

Ended up staying all day watching.  After the match two men let me shoot their rifles before they cleaned them.  I shot 5 from each at 25 yd off-hand.  Even though I have shot all kinds of weapons all my life, it was the first time ever for black powder, not even the in-lines.  So, I know nothing about muzzleloaders.  In-lines I found out were not very well liked or tolerated by these fellows.  Anyway I was impressed on how accurate the rifles were.  Told myself I have got to get me one of these and see if I can shoot as well as these old fellows.

No, I did not think you were rude “lostid”.  I thought that I just did not phrase my question right.  I thought I would get an entry-level rifle and pistol to learn on until I know enough to know what to buy or build.

Looking at some of the rifles (donÂ’t want to have to rob a bank to get started though), figured I needed some expert advice.  Is there a good book on the subject?  There must be a muzzleloader organization (probably many), to check on to see if there is a GROUP in my area of the country.  It is too far (4 hours) to drive to West Virginia every time to shoot with others.

Thanks to everyone for the advice.

Thanks crow-feather, I know it will be fun.  Mike

Pedersoli Gibbs will give you a match rifle you can use to 1,000 yards, but you'll need an elongated bullet around 540 grains not patched ball.

you need to do a lot more homework.. go to the matches and see the clubs in action if you want to compete.. they will let you shoot thier guns if you like and you may find one you like for sale.. here in our club there is no weight limit and we can use high quality peep sights like the olympic redfield..  1/4 minute clicks at 100 yards.. the best shot around here uses a 26 pound 56 caliber gun..  then there are offhand matches, etc etc.. sights are very important, as temperature can change impact point a couple inches, other factores make the adjutable sights good but a lot of clubs probaly wont alow them.. so get what you can use.. if you just shoot  alone in the woods it wont matter.. there are many different types of black powder guns and competitions, and bullets, etc, so i would spend the summer going to matches..if i had to choose between a of the shelf gun and a used competition gun i would take the used gun if it shot good.. some shooters use spit patches and this can dammage the breach after time.. but they wont shoot under 2-3 inches at 100 yards.. look at the patches to know if the gun is cutting patches are being cut or blown or burned thru..  youve got a lot to learn before you buy a target rifle.. i have two in my pawn shop now for 100 dollars and   150 dollars that would get you going until you learn more about it and you would not be out alot of money and you could easily sell them for half that.. so look around..   good luck.. dave.

Grandpa

Don't know how close you are to Appomattox but one of the truly great gun builders is there

Ask around for Jim Hash when you go to a shoot and you may run in to him.

Jim is technology challenged (doesn't own a computer, doesn't want to) but is very knowledgable on flintlocks and has been known to dabble with BPCR and lord forbid, fast cars.

Jim has built some of the most striking flintlocks you will ever see and has been on the front covers of the magazines I sent you earlier, I cannot speak highly enough of his abilities

Tell him I said hi if you see him

and by the way, don't get in a hurry to just "get a gun"

If you go to friendship (the NMLRA events) and the Contemporary Longrifle Association show in Lexington KY http://www.longrifle.ws/
you will be able to not only see but handle some truly works of art and find out what trips your trigger

Good luck
