Just acquired a Hornet barrel and Hornady dies .....any loads to start with? Favorites? Hints? Just ordered brass and bullets from Midway.... I have several .224 cal bullets already...50,52,53 and 55grainers ( just ordered some 45 grain H.P.'s) Yeah I needed this like a hole in the head as I already have a .222 , several .223's and a .225....the other three can do everything this hornet can do only better...so give me some pluses on this deal...if there are any.... :?

Well, the hornet is quieter than the .222, and you can get 600-700 shots per pound of powder.
Another advantage of a hornet barrel is that you can ream it out to k-hornet, bee or .221 fireball ;-)

I have been playing with the Hornet barrel I got from BigBoreFan. 13.5 gr of Lil'Gun is about all the Win case will hold without extra length drop tubes, so I loaded some behind a 40 gr V-Max and got groups in the 1" neighborhood at 100 yards. I used CCI 400 and just neck sized the brass.

H4227 seems to be pretty accurate at about 10.0 gr with a 45 gr bullet. 6.0 gr of Blue Dot wasn't impressive at all. H110 didn't give as good of a group as H4227 gave.

My barrel is one of the older styles that is much more slender than the newer ones and I'm using a 12 gauge forearm and receiver. There isn't any need in "O" rings with this set up!

BTW, Rem brass will hold about 1.0 extra grain of powder.

Yes. I ordered some Rem. brass and some boolits from Midway and I have some 4227 and some lil-gun so I guess I'll be set. Do you have that K-Hornet reamer ordered yet Mitch??? Put me on your list.... :wink: :-D

I've had pretty good luck with my NEF Handi Rifle Hornet combining a 35-grain Hornady V-Max with Hodgdon's H110. One four-shot group of 11.5 grains, with bullet seated at 1.715, measured 1.2 inches, with three of that group in a .36-inch hole.

Haven't had an opportunity to try it on varmints yet, and I want tell you that a little bit of breeze can have a big effect on that little 35-grain slug.

I'm going try some Lil Gun on the 35's, if the dadratted wind will ever slow down a bit. Craziest year I've ever seen for wind.

Thanks for the input cdbeaver...I think the lightest bullet I have is a 45 grain but would like to try the light ones...have you ever heard of calhoon bullets?.... I can't find anyone how has tried the things...he makes some light ones too......

9.4 gr of 2400 behind a 40 gr V-Max bullet - 4 shot group in a nickel at 110 yards.
