I'm very seriously considering building a fully adjustable rifle/bench rest for personal use and have given more than a couple thoughts to making them for sale on this and other forums.

I would make it from steel, fully welded, and it would easily be adjustable for the handi (able to rest front just forward of the receiver) as well as a bolt gun or otherwise.

I also think I could sell this in the $45-55 price range.

Would this be something anyone here would be interested in?  I'd build my own and post photos of course so you could see the finished product.  I'm just disgusted at seeing this type of rest selling for $100 and up.

Yes it would be easily transported just about anywhere.  It can be broken down very quickly to two pieces and will be ambedextrious (SP?) in use.  Made from 1" and 1 1/4" steel.

handirifle, do you have any idea of what the shipping weight might be? Sounds like a great idea but am concerned of the shipping cost  :grin: from one coast to the other???....<><.... :grin:

Maybe my first post wasn't clear enough.  This will be the rifle rest portion ONLY, no table.  Sorry if it was confusing.  Something you can place on any bench.  Weight would be in the 5-7lbs range.

And it would be nice to weight it down, like have a sled for a sand bag or a bar to throw a small bag over just to weight it down so it doesn't "bounce" with the recoil of the rifle.

Sounds like you may have a new line of work here. I've seem some with a type of retaining strap that goes over the stock, that might be a neat feature to incorporate into it. I know, everyone has opinions, right? It does sound like something that we'd be interested in.

Funny you should mention that Handi.  I just finished a shooting bench for a range that we are building at a friends house in the country.

I started with an old cafeteria bench and added 2" stainless angle and 2" stainless tubing until I had a strong frame.  Then I topped it off with two pieces of 3/4" plywood, glued together with liquid nails and bolted to hold it, then Rhino lined the whole thing.  







This thing is heavy and it is not portable.  We also put an adjustable seat on it that slides up and down to accommodate shooters of different heights.  

I would probably be interested in what you come up with for our new bench.  Let me know when you've got it roughed out.

Sounds like a good idea. I need something more sturdy than a still sealed and rolled Neat Sheet wrapped with a soft gun sock. Could have used it today with the new 45-70 synthetic handi!

Just happens that I am in the market for one.  I have sighted my rifles off spare tires in the back of my pickup and on picnic tables over an ammo box with a jacket wadded up on it;  the hood of a car and over the top too.  I have finally broke down and ordered my own real chronograph (guestimated from data all these years) and, after long contemplation, I have decided on a "real" rifle rest.  Enjoy the graduation and keep us informed.   I am waiting with bated breath for the pics of a diagram.

I am also working on an idea for making legs that are retractable/removable for this thing.  It could be free standing.  I think the whole setup might weigh 20lbs or less.

It would be a tripod leg setup with a leg on the outside of each side in front and a center one in rear.  No bench would be needed.
