QUESTION OF THE DAY---WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE TRAPS?
« on: June 18, 2004, 06:41:19 AM »
Everyone has their favorite traps.Lets discuss the pros and cons of some of these.
 I have several favorites:
#1. For Beaver and otter, the 330 is the trap I turn to.The Species Specific 10x 10 has been a workhorse for me.IT has a tension adjustable trigger and the steel is second to none.Unlike other brands, this trap does not get bend out of shape when catching a large Beaver.
#2.The #1 stoploss has been my rat catcher of choice for decades,it allows me to take rats in shallow water ,and in places where entanglement in vegeattion is a probability.
I have to admit here, that the new Duke #1 stoploss is my brand of choice. Why?Because I helped redesign it.It is set up just the way I want it.
#3.I catch a lot of coon in my stoploss, but if setting strictly for coon and mink,I like a #11 or a #1 1/2 coil.
 #4.For yote,I like the #2 coilspring,now I only set for yotes when I have to.(Boy am I lucky)
Now it's your turn--what do you use and why?

For Rats my favorite trap is a BMI 110, followed by a Victor 1.5 LS
For mink a Victor 1.5 LS, followed by a BMI 110 Mag.
For coon a reversed chain Victor 1.5 LS for water and a 160 or 220 on land, followed by 1.5 coils at a distant 3rd.
For weasels I use Victor snap traps in weasel boxes exclusively.
For otter and beaver I run 330 belsiles (and a handful of Belsile 280's)
For canines I'm investing in #2 OS w/IS lams and base plates now that my area is overun with coyotes. I've been down the 1.75 road with all manufacturers and just don't find any of them to be adequate for big easterns.

Its pretty obvious I employ and own a ton of Victor 1.5 LS's and I actually have 4 dozen new in the box in case the used market drys up on these. I reverse the chain on about 5 dozen of them for pocket sets and leave the other 6-7 dozen off the spring. All of these traps have auxilary springs as well and I've found them to be a very easy trap to have confidence in, as well as easy bedding and light firing.

For sale.....4- Montgomery 1.5 round jaw coils, very strong, night latched $26+ shipping. Also have 6- #2 round jaw montgomery's (dog on), strong springs, $48 + shipping. PM me if interested.

Muskrats- 110 Conibears

Beaver- I have only used 330's and I do need to learn how to use foot traps for them.  Only because my wife can set a #5 bridger.

Fox and Coyote- I personally like the #2 bridger laminated NOT four coiled.

Coon- 220 and lil grizz's

I run such a smorgusborg of traps, I don't think I could narrow my choices down to a specific trap type or brand.

For water trapping I lean more towards using coni's more than footholds when possible.

I just started getting going for canines this last couple of years, so no favorites yet.

Coyote, snares come in first, just because Im addicted to them right now and they stay in serivce longer w/o maint., then 1.75 duke o/s that boggy talked me into buying last year, great trap when fox and coon are also around, also use vic #3 l/s. Coon, 220 coni any brand because I like to pick up clean dry fur. Beaver, 330 coni This trap became more useable to me after watchig boggys demo in Nebraska last year.  Jeff

I am really, really hoping that the #3 Montana's are my favorite because I sold all my traps and went to them exclusively. That was a pretty bold move for me and I hope I am not disappointed.
If anybody's interested in 6 new fully modified #2 Bridgers for a pretty good price, pm me and we'll work something out.

QUESTION OF THE DAY---WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORIT
« Reply #16 on: June 22, 2004, 09:15:58 AM »
:D Hi.

I have Victors, Blake & Lamb, Duke and Sleepy Creek traps.

1. for Raccoon, I like the Oneida Victor 1 1/2 single longspring. I like longspring traps and they are the first traps that I bought years ago and they are still strong.

2. For Fox, I like the 1 1/2 coilspring Duke traps. They are reasonable in price. They are built very well and have strong springs. The only thing about the Duke trap that I would change would be to have a better finishing up at the factory. The Duke traps that I have bought have required more sanding of sharp/rough edges where as the victor  coilspring traps were smooth and did not need any sanding.

3. For Coyote: I like both the Victor 1 3/4 offset coilspring trap and the Duke 1 3/4 offset coilspring trap. The Victor wins when it came to having no rough edges, but the Duke is the overall winner because of the price, availablity and I just can't see spending the extra money when all the Duke trap requires is just a little sanding of any rough edges.

I do have 6 Sleepy Creek #2 Double Longspring traps. I am not satisfied with them. The springs weakened after just one season.

I do wish that Duke Co. would make a #2 double longspring trap, but with a slightly wider jawspread. It would be good if the jawspread were increased to 5 - 5 1/2 inches inside jawspread . That size jawspread would make a # 2 double longspring trap more capable to handle Eastern Coyotes.

                                                                    Thanks,

                                                                coyote trapper1928

coyotes: I use #2 longs and #2 coils almost exclusively. The longs have booster springs added and I center-mount and swivel the heck out of 'em. I have both Victor and Blake & Lamb modesl. For the #2 coils I have Dukes and Montgomerys. I also use some #3 longs and #3 coils once and awhile. I have those in Northwoods and Bridger. I really like the #2 dogless Monty's I have, I also use some snares
Cats: same as coyotes
Fox: #11 longs, snares, 1-1/2 coils, and #2 longs
Coons: #11 longs, snares, 1-1/2 coils on drowners, reverse-chained #1 longs with booster springs, and coon cuffs, use some #220s too
mink: #110 or #120
muskrat: #110 and #1 longs on drowners
beaver: #4 longs on drowners, #330s, snares

I've caught possum and skunks both in every trap model I own now except the #330. And now that I've said that I can count on one visiting a beaver set this fall too, I bet.

My question is how in the world did this end up on the Questions about Forums Forum as opposed to the Trapping Forum? And how in the world did all you trappers find it hidden way down here?

Did it get moved in some way by accident? Did it get split or what?

BTW Tom have you read Matt's comments to another Moderator having a similar problem to yours.

I dont fur trap much persay but here is my list

Beaver   I dont use much of the body grip traps here and will usually pull out a snare first. CDR's are my favorite foot hold

Fox   Blake and Lamb 1.5 w/ no mods.......without a coyote population I do not believe one needs anything  bigger or fancier.

Rats.........110 bg

Cats   Newhouse #3 dls and fully modified bridger 3's..........I drag all my cat traps and like the extra weight of these big traps.
