lease?
« on: June 17, 2004, 04:11:57 PM »
Ok guys, A few dumb questions for ya... 1) What is a hunting lease and how does it work? Where I live its all smaller farms(100-40 acres) and you just ask the farmer if you can hunt on his land. It's either yes or no but almost unheard of for someone to charge to hunt/ trap thier land.2) how do you get into a lease?  And do Texans let yankees in on them? I like to go to Texas once a year to hog hunt, but would probably go a little more often if I didn't have to pay a guide/outfitter evry time. Thanks for educating me!

In a lease situation you do just that, you lease the right to hunt on that property. You pay so much a year or season to take a certain amount or species of game. There are many variations and stipulations depending on who you are dealing with. There are very few places here in TX where you could walk up and ask to hunt and someone say yes. It is a money game and gets higher every year. East TX leases which were cheaper are going up every year especially since the timber companies are selling out to private investment groups(thats ok, makes buying timber easier and thats how I live.) Some land that we manage and lease out is up to $8/ac this year depending on the amount and types of game.electricity, water, creeks, ponds etc. The better it is the more it costs in most places. Hope this gives you an idea.
