I've fired port heavy caliber pistols and find the blast detestable.  I have arthritis in my hands really bad but shoot unported 44 mags with little problem.  They do work to a degree but a quick second shot is not something I worry about when hunting..

I think if you were in desperate need, you wouldn't notice the recoil!  The few times where the excrement had truly impacted the rotary impeller, I never noticed gunfire at all and never even felt the recoil of a 300 mag..  Also remember, 1 in the right place is worth a bunch more around the edges!!

there are several things I see as pro and con.  First we must understand what the ports are there for, they are to reduce muzzle jump.  They do not reduce the actuall recoil although they do ameliorate the felt recoil to some extent.  The purpose is to facilitate a quick second shot.  I feel they increase the muzzle blast and make practice less fun..  This may well be their worst con.  They also make firing a shot in an unorthodox position problematic.  From the hip, without ear protection(unless you where plugs in the woods) and you won't hear for a week.  I feel that against the larger predators a pistol of anykind is a poor defense but your best chance is to fire one aimed round.  If the bear allows no alternative a well placed heaavy hard cast flat point bullet may penetrate enough to affect the outcome..  Practice with full power loads a learn to used the muzzle bounce to recock your single action..

That old saw really needs updating.,,  'Perfect practice makes perfect'.  Practice the correct way and always follow that pattern or all you do is re-inforce your bad habits.  I don't know about you but my bad habits don't need any help!!
