Another bear.
« on: June 16, 2004, 08:51:30 AM »
Well last nigth I went into a bait stand up north with little hopes of seeing anything.  The stand on the last trip up looked hardly undistrubed.  After about 3 hours, I looked up and spotted a color phase bear and a black bear about 30 yards out.

In time the color phase came in but it looked just to small. He was dead if I want him but I passed.

The blackie came in next. Bigger but no trophy.  She spooked once but came back in, in about 15 minutes.  My bug dope was not of their liking as I think it was spooking the bears.  I watched for about 15 nimutes before deciding on the last night of baiting, to take the shot.

First chance for the new BowTech to do something.  The arrow hit perfectly and within 20 seconds the bear was dead, within 30 yards.
I processed the bear, packed things up and cold not lift the pack on my back.  So I raised it up to a tree step and hung it on that.  Turned around, and backed into it.  Ugh!  If I leaned forward I could walk, barely. It was a long 1/4 mile out to the truck and my heart held together through the pounding.

More pictures to take and more fleshing to do.

Dave,
You dog! Take a bow.
Here in Satans backyard we are lucky if we see one bear in a lifetime.
  I'm jealous.

It ran down the dirt road couple hundred yards then off into the brush, and just sat there and watched us. Glad we dint have  hostile encounter cause all I had with me was a 22mag. 22mag comes out of the truck, short bbled 12ga goes in truck(with slugs)

Too bad that bow has wheels on it, though...  Good shooting!

I have a Fred Bear 50 lb. stick back in NY that I left behind.  In November I plan on retuning with it and practicing.  With any luck, next year, I can report a kill with that.

The farthest shot so far has been 20 yards.  I should be able to it with the stick.  But a good cut-on-impact head with be needed. :P

Dave,

Congrats on another bear! How did the hide look? Was there any rubbed spots?

Rubbing

Thanks everyone!

No, no rubbing what-so-ever.  That is one of the reasons I took her.  She looked like she had a good hide and I had an adequate amount of time to look her over.

The cinnimmon I just wasn't sure about so I passed him.

FYI  - Of the three bears that I witnessed this year:  Mine was swatted in the neck by another bear and the other two both had teeth wounds in front of the rear legs.  Not an easy life out there I guess.
