scopes for SS rifles
« on: June 13, 2004, 07:28:20 AM »
Although not very traditional, can Sharps rifles be easily scoped using Lyman or Unertel type target scopes? With there side hammer system it looks to be possible when I lay the scope onto the barrel. Where would I get the flat scope bases required?

Check w/ Parsons’ Optical. Gil Parsons is  licensed by Lyman to build, repair, etc, the Lyman Targetspot ‘scopes. A few yrs ago, he also made a Lyman-clone BPCR ‘scope. Very impressive scope.

If he doesn’t have them, try MVA:

Lastly, there is an ad in the “Single Shot Exchange” for ‘scope bases (3/16, ¼, 5/16,3/8, & ½” high) & appropriate screws.  Supposedly will fit rd or oct barrels:

I have 2 Parsons’ ‘scopes  & Can vouch for his quality of work. Those scopes w/the newer Malcolm  mounts along w/ the newer MVA scopes & improved Malcolm mounts are NRA approved by silhouette.

Or you could get a ‘scope from

RHO Instruments

@ time, I had an RHO, but sold it as it was a PITA to adjust for the wind. I don’t know how his “improved” mounts works as I have seen one.

Unertl is still in business. In addition to "new" style 'scopes they continue to offer "long" 'scopes. If you happen to come across a used Unertl with problems at a reasonable price, the repair department will take care of you. I picked up a scope with a rusty section of the tube (caused by storing it wrapped in paper) which was shipped to the manufacturer, repaired and returned within a week.

If you need bases for this type scope you might try Champion Shooters Supply. (Look in the Bases and Mounts section). If you need help in your selection call these folks and ask to speak with Carl.

I too can recommend Parsons Optical. They did a fine job refurbishing a Targetspot for me.
