Cabelas Hammer Extension
« on: June 21, 2004, 02:53:15 AM »
Cabelas carries a hammer "extension" ($10) that comes in silver or black.  I've got one of each, used on a stainless Encore rifle and a blue Encore pistol.

They call it a hammer EXPANDER, not an extension.  I guess they figure an expander expands the hammer to the sides where an extender would make the hammer longer to the rear of the gun.

These are really a good safety item for guns with scopes.  I accidentally fired a shot into the ground once while trying to let the stock hammer down while hunting.  The gun was in front of me and close to my chest.  Encore pistols are normally loud, but when one fires 12 inches from your head, it's a real blast!  Deer don't like it much, either.

Hammer Extender Materials

Hey,

Do you know what material these extender's are made out of?  I've had problems with non-lightweight hammer extenders not firing military suplus ammo (with extra hard primers).

I think they're steel but not very heavy because they're hollow.  I only use them on muzzleloaders (Encore 209x50s) so I only know that they will fire 209 shotgun primers without fail.

Other posts have discussed problems with broken hammers caused by hammer extensions.  I have not seen this problem first-hand.

Also, this post was intended as a reply to an earlier one inquiring about hammer extensions on Encores.  I'm not sure how it ended up out here as a new topic. Sorry for any confusion.

Thanx for the tip...

I just ordered that extension from Cabela's for my 209x50 Encore. I've been looking for one.

Also threw in a Gambrel & Hoist for good measure!!

Holy flying catfish!  Do you live in Texas and hunt in Connecticut or vice versa?  That's quite a commute!    :)

It is a huge commute, but worth it!! :)

Actually, I live in CT but my wife is from San Antonio. She relocated to CT for a business promotion.

Her Family is still out there so we go back 3 - 4 times a year. They own several hundred acres in the Medina area    so when we go, she and our daughter hang with the women folk and I hunt with the men folk!!   . Hogs, Deer, Coyotes, you name it.

Here in CT I hunt Deer from Sept to January (Bow to Muzzleloader). And Turkey when in season!

Life is good!!
