Taken the rimfire plunge ...

So I've been reading all the posts in GBO, still waiting for the stainless .22-250 to become available from my local FFL, got out once for some PDogs with the .223 Ultra, and discovered most of the shots available were well under 200 yards ... Hmmm, the .17 HMR is available from my FFL.  It wins the postal match ... Hmmmm ... Yup, I ordered it!

Put a Tasco Varmint scope with mil dot reticle on order at Midway, with some high Millet rings, now all I have to do is wait for everything to come in ... Maybe the .22-250 will be available for Christmas!

FYI, I built a set of shooting sticks from Varmint Al's recipe, and got a short chair from REI, with a carry sling.  This was an excellent combination, comfortable, easy to shoot from, and easy to transport across the prairie to the towns.

:D  :D  :D  welcome aboad!!!!!!i am also waiting for a 22-250 that was ordered back in the first of the year :x  :x  :x  :x  but i just got into a 17 hornady myself, and i got to say a great varmint gun. mine dumped a mid sized coyote at about 100 yrds in its tracks. and it makes a good "thump" when it hits woodschucks too. the shootin sticks varmint al has plans for are great too, i have been using a set for a couple seasons now, and i love them too. matter a fact my harris bypod has not been on a gun yet this year. and if you get a stainless 22-250 before i get a blued one, please be sure to post how well it shoots :-D  :-D  :-D

I got an Email from my FFL, the gun's here ... And the scope and rings were delivered today.  The only problem now is finding time this weekend to get it together - I had planned on next weekend for the initial trials. It might have to wait ...

So here's a question - I bought a 6x-24x scope this time.  I have a 4x -12x already mounted on the .223.  Should I use the 12x or the 24x on the .17?  I'm leaning to the 12x, since I don't think the .17 will be too effective past 175 - 200 yards, I know the .223 will go 300, maybe a bit more. The 12x may be part of that limiting factor (couldn't be the shooter, naw, no way ...)

Any thoughts?

nm -

good to meet you !

i ordered my .17 sportster2 1/2 weeks ago, it was due in on the 16th, and today the gunshop called and told me i have to wait till next wednesday. geez, what a drag.

i'm using a simmons pro-50 scope on my 17 if i ever get it. a good and inexpensive scope going by my experience.

enjoy the 17, let me know how it shoots for you, one of those long guns won the postal match so it can't be bad at all.

I am patiently (more or less ) awaiting arrival of a .22 NEF myself. Hopefully will hear in the next couple of days from my FFL.

Where in NM are you? I'm in ABQ.

Cheers
