Fine hog, howie  and I would say you  enjoy having those young hunters with you.  There is not much you can hunt  as far I am concerned that is as good to eat as wild hog.  Several years ago I used to get hogs from a local ranch in central Florida. At certain times of the year they would round up the hogs and put them in a large pen so I would go down and pick me out a couple and I would take my ruger single six with the 22 mag cylinder and pop them between the eyes or behind the ear and they would drop right now with no meat wasted. If you try  the head shot next time it will save a lot of that shoulder but anyway bring on the bar b que.

jasmine  is  my  little  hunting  buddy  and  she  has  progressed  alot  this  last  year  the  first  time  she  seen  a  hog  in  the  wild  we  were on a creek bank  checking  some traps  that  i  had set for coons  when  a small  boar  came in on us    the  tears  started  to  flow  i  whispered  to  her  to   sit  still  and  all  and  he  will never  come  near  us(i honestly thought he would come at us) i  had  a  marlin model 60 with me  and  she  had  a  stick  but  since  then  i  have  slowly developed  her  and  at  the  trap  the  other  day  she  wanted  to   shoot  one  of the  pigs,  i  held  back  as  i  am  new  to  this  trapping  pigs ( I normally hunt  them) but figured  this  would be an easier  way  for  my daughter  to  get  up  and  close  to  them  and  get  use  to  them.  I  will tell  you  one  thing  after  i  shot  that  sow  that  small  boar  was  going nuts  i  was  going  to try  to  get  him out  but  instead  i took  a  stick  and  poked  him  and  he  ran  out  of  the  trap.  it  was  funny  as  i  glanced  back  at  my  daughter  and  she  cocked  her little  22 cricket  back  and  took  aim  as  the  little  pig  ran out  of  the  trap,  i  figured  ill  let  him  grow  up  and  try  for  him  when  he  is  a  trophy boar  with  nice  tusks

Howie,
Don't let any one git under your skin, People from up north don't have any idea what its like or what the situation is down in the brush patch of east Texas. If some one went down there and had to crowl on their belly with the rattle snakes, cotten mouths and all the crowlly biting critters they wouldn't have any thing to say, Keep up the good work howie. good luck...............Joe.................................................................................

bubba, I aint from texas but thats where I hog hunt. Yep, What Howie is doing is perfectly legal AND ETHICAL. Hog are a nongame species in Texas and as such maybe hunted/killed just about anyway you can think of.  I have hunted them with dogs, hunted out of a stand over bait and even hunted them from a truck with a spotlight-trust me it aint like shining deer. Most land owners consider feral pigs a pest because of the collasal amount of damage they do to crops and feeders.   i am also a trapper. I've never tried to trap hogs mind you, just coon, fox and coyote.  The thing about trapping is, its almost completely selective. I decide whether to dispatch (shoot) the animal in my trap, or release it ,wich is exactly what Howie did, only on a bigger scale. In fact,  alot of landowners would be furious with Howie for choosing to release the little boar.  Do you by anychance watch alot of disney movies?

no  i  would  not  ever  think about trapping  a  deer  then  shooting,  part  of  the  by-laws  with  Lp  is  to maintain a hog  trap, since  i  am  the  one  who enjoys hogs  the  most  i  have  been  selected  to  maintain the trap  if  i  do  not  maintain a trap  or  follow  the  by-laws  of  our  leased  land  then  i do  not  have a place  to hunt,  on another note  i  am a novice hog trapper  and am learning  and  my  daughters enjoy doing with me  if  they found out  i released  a  pig  i  would  be  sure  to  be fined  or  even expelled  from  my hunting  i  am obligated  to trap these hogs.  in Texas  you  have  the  options  of  hunting private land, leased land  federal land  or  not  hunting at all.  like  i  said  i  have  had  better  luck hunting pigs  then trapping    this  was  an unbelievable moment  i  shared  with  my daughter.  and  we  are enjoying  eating  that  tender  young  sow.  if  you  lived  closer  i  would  invite  you   for  some  ribs  or  some  tenderloin   or  we  could   smoke  a  ham.

We're with you Howie  :D  !! You can't please everybody and you don't need to explain yourself!!

I'm from CT but my wife's family is in TX. We go there at least 4 times a year and I always hunt hogs on their land when I'm there!! To my in-laws, the pigs are like any other pest!! They make a mess of everything and breed like rabbits. I catch more hell for not taking every pig I see, than for anything else!! Including being a Yankee

Not all us Yankee's are ignorant to the way things are   .

The way I look at it they are Varmints, Hogs destroy farming lands etc...kill them any way you can,Dinner on the table, make good table fair as well.  I guess you would not call trapping, hunting, but there is a place for trapping, one reason to reduce numbers, cut down populations, those hogs can get out of hand, sometimes they get smart to the hunt, and stay in the thick stuff to elude hunters till dark, no way other than trapping them, jaw traps, cage, snare, what ever, never trapped hogs, but I will tell you trapping black bears is a lot of fun, but when releasing them stay clear, boy are they pissed off LOL. Bears pretend to be worn out, don't fall for that, if they get ahold of you, your done for, he will take out all his anger on you;) One time a huge bear got away from one of the cage traps, due to he was bigger than the cage;) the door dropped on his back and stopped the door from closing, he must of held that 400 pd door up till he terned and got out, now thats impressive, take three of us to pull that heavy door up. most of the time we catch and release, sometimes relocating bad bears to other areas, more remote, so they won't get back to dumping your garbages. Also snare bears as well, sometimes it is nice to see them alive and well, instead of dead with a big hole in them LOL. Aim small hit small. RAMbo.

i sanred a pig  last  year on the tolar  ranch  by accident  i  was  trying  to  prevent  the coyotes  from going under  the  fence, come to find out  it  was actually  pigs  i  i  put  corn in the  hole  and  put  the  snare  in  the  bottom  to  where  a  pig  wuould hook  his  snout     it  worked.  my question  is  if  i  do  not  shoot  the  pig  in  the  trap  how  do  i get  it  out  of  there,  we  cannot  use  4  wheelers  or  dogs  on  this  place  i  did  let  the  little  boar  go   but  even  a  sow  the  size  i  killed  makes  me  nervous  i  have  been  on  the  other  side  of  one  and  it  is not  any  fun,  people  think  this  may  be  crazy   but  pigs  can  actually  jump surprisingly high  let  me  know  what  you  think

My Mother-in-law and her brother own several hundred acres in Rio Medina. 40 minutes outside of San Antonio. My brother-in-law owns another 70 acres adjacdent to that property. My mother in-law lives in the suberbs of San Antonio which is were we stay when we visit. The family property has a cabin on it and I stay there a good deal of the time.

There are Hogs everywhere!! Some bruisers too. I hunt mainly Hogs & Coyotes as an Out of state TX Deer lisence is over $250  . I buy the $40 special lisence which allows me to hunt most anything but Deer & Turkeys for 5 consecutive days. I may treat myself to a Deer license this year as its been so wet in that part of TX and that makes for big racks  .

Here in CT, my brother manages a 250 acre Horse farm. I work a long day on the property each month for the priveledge of unlimited hunting on the property. Deer, Turkey's, Coyotes, WoodChucks, etc.  I wish we had Hogs here, but there are so many Deer that they do enough damage. The land owner has asked me to try to fill ALL my tags this year (archery, rifle & muzzleloader) to try to reduce the population!

My little girl (4 yrs) like your youngest is really getting into learning to hunt. She's got eyes like an eagle and spots turkey's better than me!

Keep the photos coming!! I hope to be able to share some soon. The last hog I took was when we were there for Easter. Big momma hog came to my feeder with 8 piglets and left with 7, #8 came home with me :) ...a nice 50lb eatin pig!!  After I process the meat, I freeze it. The morning we leave for home I pack it in a cooler with those frozen gel things and it stays until we get home when I put it in our freezer.

Turkey's are so frustrating!! I've taken 1 in 3 years of trying, and never during the fall season. The one I took was Huge though!! 25 lbs dressed, 1.5 inch spurs and a 10.5 inch beard! This year I watched 3 Toms for 5 days while pig hunting in TX. Came home to CT and didn't see a Tom while hunting. I heard 2, but couldn't get them to come to me. Too many hens and really dense forest.

I see you use a 270 & 30-30 for hogs and I meant to mention in my last post the rifle that I use in TX for Hogs. I bought a WWII Surplus Japanese Arisaka M38 that was reamed from 6.5 x 50 to the 6.5 x 55 swede. I bought it for $100 from my 90 year old neighbor just before he was forced to go to a care facility. I leave it at the ranch in TX instead of hauling a rifle back & fourth each time I fly. He had sporterized it and with my hand loads its very accurate. I load both 140gr SP and 160gr RNSP bullets pushed by RL22. The last two Hogs I took were @ 100yds and the 6.5 x 55 swede knocked those pigs down & out. Both heart shots.

Someday I want to take my new Marlin 1895 in 45-70 out to TX and try that on the hogs!! I put a Williams peep sight on it instead of a scope. I'm working out handloads for over the summer.

I'll PM once I figure it out.

Another  45-70 fan!!!  i  am also  a  fan  of  the  45-70  although  mine  was  a  NEF  i  have  shot  them  with  alot  of  different calibers  but  i have  killed the  most  with  an  old  marlin 30Aw  wal-mart version 30-30  i  have  also  had  a  6.5X55  and  i  loved  it  i  have  downsized  my  gun collection  and  now  just  hunt  with  a  30-30  and  a  270,  although  i  have  either  a  guide  gun  or  standard  verion on  my  mind  in 45-70  a  ruger  1  in  7X57  is also  high  on  my  list  the  most  powerful  gun  i  have  ever  used  was  a  rugwer numbe 1  in 375H&H mag  using 300 gr softpoints  i  shot  a  large  hog  with  it  and  honestly  it  ran 50 yards  after  a  center shoulder shot   it  exited  the  offside  shoulder  and  still  ran  on  the  other  hand  the  2  biggest pigs  i  have  killed  dropped  in  there tracks from  a  170 gr corelokt  to  the  shoulder.  before  i  came to  graybears   and  became  educated  i  thought  the  30-30  was  the  most  powerful  gun in the  world  i  had  complete confidence in that old rifle,  i  noticed  when  using  that  rifle  i aleways  was   close  enough  to  them  to  put  a  quick humane ending  to  them  i  never  took  running  shots   or  bad  angle  shots.  Once  i  started  using  these other calibers  i  started having bad luck   i  have  shot  2  in  the  last  year  that  i  wish  i  could  take  the  shots  back  i  rushed  the  shots  made  a  poor  choice  of  angle   as  i  figured   that  i had  a  gun  that  had  2  times  the  energy  of  my old 30-30  ive  learned  alot    and  now  when  stand  hunting  i  use  my  cheap remington 710 270 this  gun  is  remarkably accurate  rivals   the  savages    i  must  admit  it  is  ugly  but it suere  does  shoot.  and  when  roaming  i  have  that  old  30-30  with  the  same tasco 3-9X40 pronghorn  that  i  paid  29.00  for  it  has  never  changed  point of impact  and  has seen  some  very hard  use  i  use  weaver base  and  weaver rings on it

The first Hog I ever took, a 150lb sow (yummy) was with my brother-in-laws Winchester model 70 in 270. It was a neck shot and the hog ran about 50 yards before expiring. Since then its the old Arisaka in 6.5x55.

I took a shot I wanted back a couple of years ago. I shot a 200lb Boar @ 100yds and my POI was a little off to the right. It was before I started to handload for more consistent shots. It was with PMC 140gr SP ammo. @ 100 yds that 6.5 x 55 swede broke both of the hogs front legs. He went down, squealed, and then got up & bolted. When I got to the impact site, there was no blood trail. I couldn't believe it!! I went in growing circles looking for blood and there was none. I went back to the impact site and sat down to listen for a while. I finally heard some rustling and went in that direction. I was not happy about chasing a 200lb, wounded, pissed of Boar Hog into the brush, but it was my fault he was there and my ethical responsibility to finish the hunt! I finally came upon blood in the direction of the first sounds that I heard. The pig was pushing himself with his rear legs and making a grove in the ground as he went. We danced a little and I finally put one behind his ear. I'm a better hunter for that experience, but I didn't like to have to use two bullets for one pig!

I have one of those ugly, synthetic stock Savages in 7mm-08 and I use it for Deer hunting out here. You cannot beat the out-of-the-box accuracy of those rifles. And, I really like the flat shooting 7mm-08 caliber. I take it out in all weather (and you know what its like out here during Deer season) and never worry about it.

I really really like my new Marlin 1895 in 45-70. Its fun to shoot and I kept it pure by using the Williams instead of a scope. I'm going to use it here in CT during Deer Rifle season when I go into the brush in poor weather to try to ambush a bedded deer.

sounds  like  we  hunt  alot  alike  and  think  the  same  way.  i agree about savages  they are awesome!!!  but  this  darn remington 710    will  shoot  3  into .75 consistantly enough  to  say  it  shoots 3/4 min of angle   i  have  shot  some  partitions   federal premium  and  remington coreloktas  both  shoot  to  similar points of impact  so  i  will stick  with  this  load  the  remingtons  are  cheap 10.87   for  a  box  and  if  i  ever  get  back  to handloading  Ill  shoot  a  box  for  around  4.00 or  cheaper  as  ill  use  remington bulk ammo.  my  little  jasmine  is  still  small  62 lbs  but  as  she grows  and  is  able to tolerate more gun  right  now  she  is  at  the 223 level   she  did  have  her  a  ruger 22 hornet  that  i had  scaled  to  fit  her  and  she  killed  a  deer  with  it  a  smallish  doe.  the  deer  are  not  as  big  as  up  north  although  i  have  killed  a  couple  in  the  150 lb  range.  Jasmine  may step  up  to  the  243  maybe  next  year  but  if  she  does  so  ill  load  some  good  bullets  at  a medium velocity  to  start  her  out  on  she  has  a  youth nef lightweight  that  she  shoots  very  well  at 50 yards  that  uis  her limit  as  far  as  from  a  rest.  for  a  little  girls   she  shoots  very  well.  her  little  crickett  22  has  killed a mess  of  squirrel  this  year   and  the  rabbits  have fared no better.  she  is  till  after  her  first  pig  and  had  the oppurtunity  to  shoot  that  little  boar  in  the  trap,    when  i  released  him   but  i  told  her   to  decock  her  rifle  as  i  was  not  confident   she  coulp  put  a  humane  shot  on  a  pig with  a  22.  i  do  no  some  old timers  who  seriously  hunt  themn  with  a  22   but  that  is not  for  me!!!!  i  need  all  the  bullet  i c an  get

In CT, you have to be 12 yrs old and have completed the Gun/Hunting safety course before you can hunt. My 4.5 yr old comes with me for scouting until then.
