Winchester 94 sights.
« on: February 17, 2004, 05:11:21 PM »
I have a new (used) Winchester 94 AE in 357 mag.

The rifle is fine, my concern is the factory sights are not gonna work with my eyesight.  The front and back sight blend together and become one.

I shoot a 45 acp and various 38's and 357's with iron sights and do not have this problem.

Can these sights be changed with better sights.

What is available?

Thanks.

Winchester Sights

HappyHunter:  Yup, those sights are not good on old eyes.  The front bead sight is tough enough to pick up, but it is even worse to try and center it in that modified buckhorn Winchester uses for a rear sight.

I would try a couple of tricks:  (1) I would pull the sight blade out of the rear sight so you have more of an original buckhorn sight, which is pretty open and makes it easier to both see your target as well as the front sight.  If that works for you you will probably have to get another front sight blade (I use a blade front sight from Brownells with a white stripe in the center - very easy to pick up quickly) to get your rifle to print where you want it to at 100 yds.  Or, (2) if that doesn't work for you, try an  aperature sights/peep sight/ghost ring for the rear sight and go with a blade front sight - those seem to be the best combination of sights for many folk.

Check out Brownells for those sights, or find the Ashley Ghost Ring sights on the net - prolly under Ashley - and then you can see what I mean.  If you have had any military experience since WWI, then you will have used the military rear peep sight and the ghost rings work the same way.  HTH.  Mikey.

Mikey,

Once more thank you Mikey, for the sound advice.

I do not have the honor of military experience, I consider myself fornunate and grateful to others that served.

I will be checking on Brownells.

Check out Marble's Outdoors. They make many types of both open and peep sites for M94's. In fact, they make a peep site that is specifically designed for the M94. Old violators uset to take the apeture out of the peep site and use it for low light shooting. Plus they're made in my home town.

Williams Peep sights do the trick.

I installed Williams target turret foolproof peep sights on the rifle and shot a raged hole at 75 feet to sight in.  It goes to the range on Sunday to set up at a reasonable distance.

It appears that the peep sight will work great!

Thanks for the advice.

If you decide to put a tang sight on your 94, I'd go with the Marble.  Had a Lyman # 2 and thre was too much play in it for me.  For just a little more, the Marble is rock solid and you have the option of clikc windage ajustments

I did not want the tang sight, but the Williams does have the click adjustment.  I really like the turret adjustment knobs.
