a friend of mine has talked me into hunting black bear with him in northern alberta this spring. he is using a bow and insists that i use one to. he can be a real idiot some times because i don't own a bow, i can't afford one right now, i've only shot one a couple times, and i don't a lot of arm strength. and my first time hunting with one will not be shooting at a bear while sitting in a ground blind!! anyways my problem is that i still haven't recived my PAL. they told me i should get about 2 weeks after my planned hunt(why am i not surprised) so i can't take any of my guns with me. i might by a flintlock muzzle loader since no license is requiered and i want one anyways. every time i call the fire arms center to ask them aboutregs on borrowing i get the run around and i am still confused. i thought some of you guys might be able to help. :grin:

hey kevin, upnorth here. I sugest you check out the gov't web site www.cfc.gc.ca and check under owners and users bullitens. It states that you do not need a licence if you are under the direct supervision of a licenced adult. If your friend is licenced, your ok. Natural resources in alberta have stated that they will not enforce any part of the firearm act because they are provincial employees. HOWEVER, there is nothing stopping the RCMP or a federal employee from setting up right beside them, or ride with them to enforce the law. hope this helps.

I can't recomend it, but I will point out, that charges under the act, are not sticking very well. :twisted:

Kevin - At our Wildlife meeting in Dec (northern Alberta) the wildlife
officers were asked about the registration. The officer said that if
we were stopped by any officer in our area they would NOT ask anyone
for proof of registration. That is if you were not breaking any
wildlife laws. He did say that if for some reason you were stopped by
the RCMP then they may check for registration.
Having said that I would think that if you have some proof that you
have sent in your forms I think they would be very reluctant to lay any
charges.
As a RCMP told me a month ago they have way too many others things
to keep busy at.

my buddy isn't licensed but his step dad is so it might work out after all. can i borrow a rifle from him and hunt with it?

well kevin, I guess it all depends on the gov't interpretation of" in direct supervision" If you can figure that out, you should be ok. But be aware, even though d.n.r. staff say they won't check, they have been doing so here in manitoba under the direction of the R.C.M.P.

Two things to remember. First; the French version of RCMP or Rats Cats Mice and Pigs is, GRC or Gestopo Royal Canadian. the RCMP is the Federal police in Canada and have jurisdiction from coast to coast.

Second; the hardest part of getting rid of an RCMP officer is the car.
