TC Encore question.....
« on: July 11, 2004, 07:06:32 AM »
I've been thinking of getting a TC Encore so that I can play with different calibers more economically. My concern is that will the sound of the hammer being cocked back scare or alert the coyote and creat a missed opportunity? I guess I bowhunted so long that I am very sound and scent conscious. I will probably go with a Bulberry or V V barrel. The slower reloading is an issue but that is the challenge of hunting with a single shot is all about.

Hal,

I haven't noticed that cocking my Encore makes much noise at all.  HOWEVER, thumbing the hammer down after cocking makes more than I wish it did.  I have not yet hunted with it but think it could be a game spooker if you were letting down not knowing an animal was nearby.

Shot 1 Coyote so far with my Enocre .30-06.  I agree it hardly makes any noise, at leasr nothing a coyote would notice really.  It may not be the fastest set-up for fast moving, multiple Coyotes, but it should do ya plenty good.

P.S. My Coyote was shot at a distance of no more than 20-25 yards.  So this one was close.  It was fixated on the distressed cottontail call from the boom box and I dont think it heard anything at al.......'cept for the loud BOOM when it went tumbling over  :) .

You will be shoooting them much farther away with a rifle than with a bow so you really shouldn`t have any problems.

I've got some practice with the T/C single shots and I can reload them pretty quickly, certainly fast enough for a quick follow up shot if I need it. It's just a matter of practice. Having a cartridge holder that fits around your wrist helps a lot.  As to "economically", you can easily spend more money than with other kinds of rifles. Those custom barrels are not much less expensive than quality rifles like the CZs or Tikkas.  My factory 223 barrel shoots into 3/4". Most other factory 223 barrels seem to do that too.
