California State Smallbore Championship Winners.

Jared Perry shot 37-34 in Standard rifle to beat Agustin Sanchez who shot 35-34.  In Hunter Agustin shot 36-39 to beat every one by a bunch of points and take three out of four High Animal Awards plus the Combined High Score Award 144X160.
Master shooters broke high animal awards ties by shooting chickens at turkey distance and by shooting pigs at ram distance.  Jared Perry hit four out of five pigs at 100 in standard rifle to win high pig and Dennis Dadian shot three out of five chickens at 77 to win high chicken in hunting.

The Dennis Dadian/Augustin Sanchez shootoff of chickens on the turkey line was dramatic. As I remember it, Sanchez started off with two quick hits. Dadian followed more slowly with one hit and one miss. Then Sanchez had a round that failed to fire and failed to eject. Dadian continued with his work, hitting one, missing one, then hitting the final chicken for a total of three. Sanchez asked for an alibi. An observer gave him a cleaning rod to eject the faulty round. All pressure now on Sanchez down one animal. He fired three times and missed three times.

Great shooting by both competitors. A smallbore chicken at 77 meters is hardly more than two minutes of angle.

One more note. Augustin got his 39 in Hunter in fairly rambunctious conditions. An exceptionally fine piece of work.

That is some excellent shooting!!!  I have a hard time seeing a sb chicken at 77  :wink: Was the match well attended?  More or less than 100 shooters?

Akihmsa, we had 47 shooters in Standard rifle and 44 in Hunting. In my opinion a good turn out, in the last few years we've had trouble getting more than 50 at  either CA or AZ state Championships.  We used to have a lot of shooters from south of the border attend our matches but since 9/11 and all the hassles with securing their guns permits they have been staying home, this year we did not have even one at our smallbore match and Los Angeles is not as far to Tijuana and other border towns as some of the other ranges they used to come to.

9/11 has made going anywhere much more of a hastle.  Heck even going into Disney Land requires a bag and purse check as do most stadium events.  50 shooters is better than 10 and hopefully we can grow the shooting sports again after folks wake up and realize so called gun control doesn't stop crime only those who follow the rules.
