Scope questions / options for new shooters

I have a cpl of new shooters that I have introduced to the sport. Very quickly they see the need for a high magnification scope with a 1/2 -5/8 moa dot. I have pointed them in the direction of the Premier Reticles 18x40 boosted scopes w/ the .0067 "silhouette" dot ~$725. They have a couple of questions...

1) Is there a mfg that makes a "out of the box" silhouette scope that compares to Premier's "Silhouette Conversion"? doesn't have to be 40x on the top end but hopefully the question makes sense.

2) Are there other scopes that can be boosted besides the Leupold? If so who/where/how much$/ etc.

3) Who does custom dots besides Premier? What types of scopes can you change out the reticle in? I have seen people talk about TK Lee (?) putting reticles in anything in the past...

4) Any other suggestion you may have would be greatly apriciated!

I have two Bushnell Elite 4200's 6-24x40.  You can get them with target knobs and dot reticles for about $400.00.

The only down side tow these scopes are the are a little heavy (because they are variable) and they have 1/8 minute ckicks.

Optics are good and they are repeatable.

Sitrons are also gaining a following.

I should have mentioned that that was a resuest of one of the guys, the 1/4 moa adjustments.

What is the dot size on the Bushnells?

I may go look and see if the answer is at swfa..lol..haha

That is great that you introduced new shooters to the sport
I have 3 B&L 4200 all with 1/4 minute dot (which is standart factory), Bushnell will put bigger dots in their custom shop for about $60- 80, but to be sure on the price - give them a call, all links to Bushnell you will find at my web.  I love the scopes - very reliable and very reasonable priced.

As to your new shooters - it confuses me that they NEED higher magnification - were most top shooters are shooting around 16-18X, and some are so strange that even - I heard went back to 6 power! - yes 6X.
I would highly recommend that they stay below 18X for now until they become really good at this (unless they are already shooting high 30s then just dont worry about my comments and do as you pleased - because you have to do something right shooting such a high scores)
as to the dot size - then it is simply your own preferrence, some like 1/2, some like 5/8, I dont mind 1/4 which is the smallest I would go for, at one time I tried 1/8 and it was just tooo fine for me, FOR ME.
unfortunatelly I do not know many guys that would change your dot, so hopefully someone from US will give you a good feedback on that issue.

Leupold can give you whatever reticle you want in your scope, throught their custom shop.  However, it seems like Premier is the main group for the boosts.

Good advice shootingpaul. Unless they are already excellent shooters one of the surest ways to aquire bad shooting habits (flinch, jerking the trigger, ect) is use too high a magnification. I think a mag of between    10-20x is more then adequate for most shooters.

George: You need to look through my two HP scopes. One is a 1/8 dot because that's what came in a bargain buy. The other is 5/8 because, when I ordered it, I just asked for the biggest dot Leupold kept in stock. Seemed like a good idea at the time. For me, it wasn't. I agree with Pawel that the 1/8 is a bit small but I like it better than the 5/8 which is definitely too large.

When I say higher power scopes I'm talking about them not being able to use their 3/9 hunting scope.

One guy is shooting a nikon 4.5 X 14 w/ a heavy duplex and finger adj turrets. He say the 14 power would probably work but would like true target knobs on the scope??

As far as dot size, I shoot 5/8 min dots (.0067") in both my scopes, some like different sizes and etc. I think the other question the guy with the Nikon has is with his heavy duplex wanting to change it out to a dot and where can he get that done vs what size dot do you recomend.

PLease remind me to let guy look through your reticle, I think it would be a good idea for him to see the difference between a 1/8, 1/4 and 5/8 moa dot before he sends his scope off if that is the way he decides to go.
