I am planning on replacing the trigger assembly on a Remington 700 CDL. I would like some help with choosing one. I am looking at either a timney or shilen trigger.  Does anyone have info on these, reliability quality etc. Pros and Cons of each. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Why do you want to replace it?   What pound pull range are you thinking of?  Are you going to hunt, shoot targets or what?

Welcome Oldgunr!

There is nothing like a trigger job to bring life into a Remington.  I am not sure about your circumstance but I have pulled some mighty nice Remington triggers that had a trigger job done on them w/o actually replacing the trigger.  But like Yankee says, got more details?

I will be using the gun for hunting, and would like to have the trigger pull set to 2.5 to 3 lbs. It is my understanding that the factory trigger, in the CDL is unsafe under 3.5 lbs. I have, years ago, on the 700 Custom Deluxe set the factory trigger at 3 lbs.

The Remington triggers can be dangerous because of their design they are a bit less forgiving than they might be.  No trigger on a hunting rifle should go lower than about 2.5-3.0 pounds of pull.  The control is difficult with lighter pulls while wearing gloves, cold numbed fingers etc.  Still usually the stock trigger can be safely dropped to 3.0 pounds and cleaned up a bit.  Also a note.-the triggers on Remington rifles use esecially the same design from the 722-721's thru the M700 line(ADL's, BDL's, and CDL's).  Some were made without adjustment(M788) but the 'connector' which is the part in the design which has been the cause of the problems, is present in all.  I've used a lot of Timneys and they are real values, the Shilen's are a bit more precise and the pull weight can be taken a bit lower but that precision is wasted in a trigger set at 3.0 pounds.  I would have the factory trigger turned down to 3.0 pounds or if the safety thing is a bother, I'd advise the timney..

Thanks gunnut69 for your reply. I will probably go with the timney as I am familiar with it. The new 700 CDL (Classic Deluxe) is one of the better offerings from Remington. Dont know if you have had the opportunity to see/fire one but is worth a look. It is reminicient of the old Custom Deluxe. Wish i hadn't sold mine.
