« on: June 27, 2004, 05:41:22 AM »
Got the NEF in for a Ruger 204!  While it's there, what other barrels would y'all suggest?  Does anybody shoot the 22-250?  How's bout the bull 223?
Thanks and Gig''em

How about going bigger?

.308, or even 45-70?

.223 Ultra with a bull barrel shoots like a dream; you wouldn't be sorry. I was thinking of a 25-06 for antelope, but people have been talking about the .280 recently, so I may go for that. Just something long & flat-shooting, that won't kill my shoulder.
Life was so much simpler when I thought I knew everything...

I'm real happy with the .223 bull barrel on my Ultra Varmint, I don't know if the 2" makes much of a difference ...

I didn't see the .22-250 listed in the barel program literature I just got with my .17 ... Hmmmm
Always dally thumb up

I have ZERO complaints with my 223 Ultra and my son's 223 standard is easily sub MOA with Win Value Pak ammo.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!

Mark,
Did H&R tell you when the 204 barrel would be available?  Last I heard guns would be out in July and barrels for the accessory program a few months later.  You may have a pretty long wait on that 204 barrel.

What NEF Said!

Actually they said nothing.  I was tired of beating my 223 to death trying for accuracy, I had traded and then traded back for this gun, thrid time woulda been dumber, and so thought what the heck.  Barrels were supposed to be out July.  I will call them the day after the tracking says it got there and will post what they say.
Thanks and Gig''em

Mark,

I think my next barrel will be a .30-06.  Even though I have an 03-A3, I have taken a liking to these Handi rifles.

The 06 can be loaded as hot or as mild as one would want.  I have loaded the .30-06 with 110 gr cast bullets with 5.0 gr Bullseye or I can load  200 gr bullets or beyond.  21.0 gr Blue Dot and a 150 gr bullet will shoot 1"-1 1/2" at 100 yards and duplicates a lot of .30-30 loads.  It is probably the most flexible round available for the Handi, if you handload.  It will shoot anything from cast round balls to AP.

It will do just about anything my .35 Whelen will do plus it will shoot sabot .22's and with an adapter it will shoot 7.62X39.

Ultra .223

mark:  I bought an Ultra .223 a couple of years ago, it shot great but had a very rough chamber.  Sold it then was sorry because it shot so well, I bought another and had it rechambered to 22-250 with out ever shooting it, this rifle will shoot 3/4 in. 5 shot groups as long as they are 50gr. or less I believe it shoots the 45 gr. best of all.  I have no idea when H&R will make the 22-250 available but it is no big thing to rechamber the .223. Good shooting tj40
