Hi All,

How hard do you think it would be to replace a Rem 700 extractor by a non-gunsmith, say in the field, or, is it better to have a Sako type installed?

It's not too hard to replace the Remington extractor but there are easier tasks. I find the riveted ones easier because the curve is critical on the snap in ones. Neither is what I'd call a field replacement.. The sako extractors break the '3 rings of steel' of the Remington action. I'm sure all warrantees are voided. I've stories but have never seen a sako fail catastrophically so am not sure how they'd react. I don't believe I'd replace a functional remington extractor unless there was damage to the bolt forcing some type of change.

There's nothing wrong with the one that I have. I've just read alot about them failing. Will leave it alone unless I need to change it.

In this area the 700 is a staple. In among all those 700's less than 1/10 of a percent have a problem. Really not bad odds. The design is questionable but even though I've worked with guns for many years I've only replaced less than a dozen or so. I've even had to replace a couple of mauser extractors,, although I believe they were broken thru abuse.
