New M44 Good News/ Bad News
« on: June 27, 2004, 01:04:08 PM »
I went to the range today with the "new" M44 & 40 rounds of 148 grn Wolf Ammo. I went to the 25 yard range to see if it was on paper..... At a 6 o'clock hold on a std. 25 yard pistol target the first shot went between the X and 10 ring at 3 O'clock  but when I tried to open the bolt to extract the case the bolt came back but the shell stayed. I thought oh great a stuck shell and cycled the bolt again, nothing. I used a fellow shooters range rod (no, it did not come with the built in cleaning rod.... ) At the first light tap of the rod the shell came out..... Tried again shot.... the round hit 1/2" above the other. Open bolt.... same result  . Range master Larry wanted to see bolt to which I pulled the bolt out for examination. To my surprise the space where the extractor should have been.... was empty  . The M44 will go back to the shop first thing in the morning.

What are you going to do??  The gun is accurate?? If you get another one it may not be as good as this one.  If you change the bolt with another one chances are the headspace may not be ok too.  If all you need is an extractor I would go to tngunparts.com and see how much an extractor is first it may not be much at all to just repair it anyway because she sounds like a shooter.                                                         BigBill

That is a very good question the gun has potential but as it is now it is like a Corvette that has a transmission with only one gear. She looks good , but only goes so fast. This shop I got it from has (had) a good reputation. The rangemaster recommended them even though he did not know I purchased it from them and was taken aback when I told him the M44 was from them. We will see Monday if I don't get tied up in work.

I took my "new old" M44 back to Kenlee's Gun Shop today and.... they
replaced the extractor with one from a junker 91/30 (which I may come
back and purchase, it can be fixed too) while I waited. I had the
option of getting my money back, but it shot well at the range other
than the extractor problem. The range that I go to is closed on
Monday and the next nearest one is about 25 miles away. There are
some indoor ranges that are open but I know the people at this
particular range & I wanted to show them what this little junk yard
gem can do. Range report to follow.

BTW the manager of the shop showed me how top strip down the bolt.

Kjeff50cal,

Sounds like you learned more about the MN44 bolt and extractor than I have in almost 2 years.  The rifle does sound like a shooter, though......

I am quite pleased with my Mosin-Nagants and want to hear about your further adventures with this "junkyard gem" (great descriptive phase)!

Thats great you fixed it and kept it since its a good shooter I hope we have a range report soon too.  Its funny how good these old overlooked rifles can shoot i'm sure the guys at the range will be impressed too.
