Replica 1851 Colt Navy Revolver
« on: June 26, 2004, 04:22:06 PM »
I just got a new Traditions 1851 Colt Navy revolver, and I am having a problem. I'm trying to get the wedge that holds the barrel in place out, and it just isn't working. I haven't tried to *really* force it out yet, because if I am doing something wrong, I don't want to break it. Can anyone help me out? Thanks!

1851 wedge removal

That barrel retaining wedge is usually very snug on a new or little-fired gun.

Remove the little retaining screw with a small screwdriver.

Using a plastic-tipped hammer or a piece of hardwoord, rap the wedge loose from the right side of the barrel

Thanks for responding    That's what I was doing, but I was having a lot of trouble, so I was afraid I was doing it wrong and didn't want to break anything. I appreciate the help.

The Stanley No. 594 plastic tip hammer has been my best friend when it comes to these things.

My screwdriver has a plastic handle, it is handy for knocking that wedge out.
Don't worry, the more you shoot it the easier it will get to deal with that wedge.
Aim small don't miss.

For them new one's, I use a big'ol nylon mallet I use for leather crafting.   Works everytime and won't ding up your gun.  :-)

Wedge Pin Puller

Thompson Center makes a tool called a "wedge pin puller" to help in removing the wedge pin from Hawken rifles.  It's got 2 little prongs that you get under the lip on the wedge pin, then you can pry it out.

Might work on pistols, too.
