How Much Should I Expect to Pay?
« on: June 30, 2004, 12:24:45 AM »
Very excited in that I just got my Model 70 barreled action back from Krieger, where they installed a lovely 26" matte stainless bbl in 25.06 Ackley Improved.

Since the new barrel's contour is different from the takeoff bbl, I'm looking for a local smith to bed the action and relieve the barrel channel in the stock for the new bbl.  This is a nice synthetic stock and one I want to retain.  What is a ballpark figure for the above described work?

Also, anyone need a like new 20" matte Model 70 bbl in .257 Roberts?

The charge for labor is a terribly location oriented rate.  Usually for something like this I would charge by the hour.  I use $30/hour as the base rate for such work.  Also glassbedding in a synthetic stock sometimes is a bit more trouble than in wood.  With the AI version of the 25-06 you are getting mighty close to the capacity of the 257 Weatherby.  That should be an interesting antelope rifle or long range coyote cruncher..
