38 long colt load data?
« on: June 30, 2004, 07:49:07 PM »
I can't find any data on loading the 38 long colt, and so far haven't needed it as I have only been loading black powder.

I'm shooting a Ubertia 51' colt navy and Pietta 61 colt navy with Kirst Konverters and plan on using Unique powder for limited runs of ammo for certain matches.

The place I bought the Konverters from list the ammo they sell as "38 COLT Hollow base flat point 165 grain hollow base pure lead bullet and 3.5 grains of Unique smokeless powder."

Is 3.5 grains of Unique a good load for this combination with eigther the 148 grain hollow bassed wadcutter or 165 grain hollow base round nose?

Thanks,

Will

I think I've got data, just have to dig it up. Might be a few days.

I load the .41 Long Colt, but use heeled bullets instead of the HB's. I heard somewhere that when using the HB's with smokeless, you need a fast powder to get proper bump-up of the base. Red Dot was recommended (I think). I never had good results with HB's in the .41, and was lucky enough to find two old Lyman molds for the original heeled bullets.

Thanks, I get good acuracy with black powder and hollow base and with a box of smokless I ordered from River junction.  I understand the open top colts require a slower burning powder as they were originaly black powder revolvers?

thanks,

Will

I got less than I thought - one load is all I can dig up.

3.0 grains of Bullseye with a 150 grain HB bullet.

That's it. Thought I had more than that. Sorry.

Thanks, I emailed Unique to confirm there loads.  I was given a pound of Unique, so I'll try to use there loads.  I did find that low power 38 special loads use 3.5-4 grains of Unique.
