My sights are fuzzy. I've been thinking about a Merit attachment until I saw the AHG flip up blinder with iris. Has anyone tried the AHG or would recommend one over the other? :shock: thanks.

Welcome to Graybeard, and the Traditional forum. If you get a chance drop a line about your firearms, we always like to know who is shooting what out there.

As far as the AHG flip up, I and most of the people I know have never used one. I saw one on the net and it does look interesting.

If you don't get the information that you need here, you might try the Modern forum, or the forum titled optics.

Crowfeather, thanks for the response. I have an Investarms (Charles Daly) Hawken 50 cal. percussion that I've had nearly 25 years, and a 32 cal. Crockett, which is perc. that I picked up not long ago. Probably be looking at a flinter around Christmas. Probably in a 45 cal.

I just started BP sillohuette with a few fellas and the competition is loads of fun. I'm looking to improve my sight picture as I can't see like I could when I was a younger snot. I can't find any fault with the Chas. He's taken quite a few deer over the years, but I've really never done much range shooting with it. It has adjustable open sights, and I can't see em as well as I used to. Most of those other fellas have those Lyman peep sights, and before I go that route, I want to see if I can hang with em with my open sights and one of those things on my glasses. If I can't improve that way, I'll probably put a Lyman on it. Hate to do that, but if you can't see em you can't hit em.

Besides the Lyman peep, you can make an older style peep that might better fit the flavor of your rifle. Read the thread, "Crow-feather, a question for you" a bit farther down which deals with alternative sights for older eyes.

Something else to try is to punch a small hole in a piece of electrical tape and stick it to your glasses. I have heard from folks who have done this and it worked fine, was a lot cheaper than using a commercial product. Even if you ultimately go store bought, the tape will give you a trial to base a decision on.

Winterhawk, wonderful idea! I'm going to give that one a try, and will give you a report back. Cheap enough and should work as I want to shoot this coming weekend. Merit or Lyman aint cheap.

Crowfeather or anyone else. You also got me putting more thought into a homemade PC peep sight. Before I start surfing the web, any ideas on a good starting place? I have the equipment ( lathe, mill etc....) but need to see some ideas although I'm not a machinist by any stretch. Wonder what a peep might have looked like on a Hawken at that time even if there was such a thing. Thanks for the ideas and useful information.
