45/70 barrel and synthetic forearm
« on: July 01, 2004, 01:26:23 PM »
Has anyone had a 45/70 fitted to a gun with synthetic stocks? I got mine back yesterday and when I put the 45/70 on it fits tight in the forearm. Haven't shot it yet so I don't know what if any effect it will have. Has anyone widened the channel in a synthetic forearm and if so what did you use to do it. If I have to open it up I'd like to do it as easily and with the best looking results as possible

hvacman,

I relieved the synthetic forearm on my .223 after it was fitted with a .357 barrel.  The synthetic is pretty hard to sand or file, so I ended up using a air powered die grinder.  A good bondo file (like they use on auto body work) might cut better while cutting a straight line.

I never did get enough relieved to get clearance for the .357, so I ended up with a 12 gauge shotgun forearm and had to relieve it some to get the .357 to float.
