Ultra Varmint Range Report
« on: July 09, 2004, 02:36:08 PM »
Finally got to the range today with the .223, .243 and .25-06 Ultra Varmint! The good news is I only had one case stick out of 90 or so rounds shot and that's cuz I forgot to wipe the chamber after cleaning the .243, the polish job worked well.  Best 100yd, 3 shot group with the .223 was with the 45gr JHP Win white box at .440" ctc, next best was the Ultramax 40gr Nosler ballistic tip with .529" ctc. The .25-06 wasn't as good but I didn't shoot as many round through it as the .223, best 100 yd 3 shot group was 1.60" ctc with Fed 117gr Sierra Game King and a runner up at 1.90" ctc with Rem 120gr Express CL. The .243 needs another scope on it, I wasn't happy with it at all so it needs another trial run. Had a great day even though they closed the 100-300 yd range for a regional cast bullet shoot this weekend, was still able to shoot on the 100yd rimfire and muzzleloader range, kinda crowded, and someone always wanted to close the range to post targets, gets kind a old when you're about to make your last of 3 shots and the range closes. I did the Varmint Al break in instead of shooting 200-300 rounds, am glad I did. I did do the shoot a round/clean routine for the first dozen shots out of each barrel. All in all, I'm real happy with the Ultra Varmint. Thanks to all of you for your help and sharing your experience and knowledge with the handi/UV rifles. As soon as I get a new scope on the .243, I'll be back to the range, maybe next week!  Tim

Tim,
It sounds like you had a great day. I'm happy to hear their shootin' for you! What do you plan on using through your .243? I hear they do their best using 85 gr. bullets. I'm not yet reloading for the .243, but I did find some 85 gr. ammo to try.

Don, I have fed 85gr sierra gameking BTHP and Win 80gr PSP. I shot 10 rounds of  the feds today but never did get it on paper at 100yds, wasn't consistant at 25yds, so I think I have a scope problem. These 2 were suggested by several shooters here that shoot factory ammo, as the best to use.  Tim

Wait until you shoot 200 yards with that 223. Mine likes the 45 win jhps also. My groups are 1" to 1.75 at that range. Then there is 300 yards 2.25 to 3.25.  I had to pinch myself to make sure I wasn't sleeping.
