I saw a photograph of an M1 Carbine, paratrooper model with folding stock, that had an aperture rear sight assembly I have not seen before. It was located on receiver bridge, like other M1 Carbine sights.

All other M1 Carbines I have seen incorporate winged aperture protectors and have sight adjustment knobs that are easy to use.

This sight assembly had no wings. The aperture was naked atop its base. I did not see any adjustments. I suspect they were screw adjustments in the base.

Does anyone have an isometric drawing or photograph of this sight? What is its model designation and number?

Hi Naphtali. If I'm not mistaken (and I'm sure the hardcore Carbine guys will give the straight scoop) all WWII combat issued carbines (M1 and M1A1) used an earlier sight just like you described....

I just did a quick check in my copy of "War Baby!" by Ruth and sure enough most production photos show the earlier sights. My 1944 dated copy of FM 23-7 (the M1 & M1A1 Carbine field manual) refers to this earlier sight as an "L-type rear sight". It had a 150 yd and 300 yd aperture and was not adjustable for windage. After the war all carbines in active service were supposed to be retrofitted to the newer adjustable rear sight that we more commonly see today.

Quick follow-up Lance from my '53 dated tech manual (TM 9-1276):

Pgs. 91-93 go over the three rear sight assemblies and states that "L" type (leaf type) rear sight B212605 was to be replaced (by modification work order ORD B28-W3) with either rear sight assemblies 6573955 (machined) or 7160060 (stamped manufacture -- the only readily visible difference is the windage adjustment knob). Btw, the figure in the tech manual with the l-type sight is Inland serial # 18.

Also, the field manual pretty much states that with the earlier leaf sight you use Kentucky windage.

I don't have a scanner handy, but a quick Google search found this hit which shows all three types (you can also see the two bolt types if you look carefully).

Sometimes you will see those L sights with a
V notch in the tops of them also!
That did not come from the factory, That was most
likely a "Field" Modification by the soldier who carried it.
