500 S&W Long Range Shooting?
« on: June 14, 2004, 06:11:54 PM »
Have any of you 500 S&W shooters tried shooting at 150-200 yds.?  Assuming one could consistently make accurate shots at longer ranges, there should be more than enough energy left for most large game.  I think some of us would be interested in hearing about your experiences.
Best,

300yds With S&W .500

Greetings from Alaska,
we unloaded over 400rds of 400gners @ 1300fps from both a stock comped 8 3/8 and a 6.5 with the comp whacked off this past weekend and had great results hitting the 300 meter swingers as long as the shooter did his job. The steel swingers are 6" X 12", certainly not world class but not bad IMHO!

Ultima,
6X12" target @ 300 meters ain't nothing to sneeze at. :-)   How does the 6" with no comp handle?  I haven't started loading for mine yet...got the components, just haven't found the time to do the load work-ups.
Best,

De-Comped .500?

Howdo TnNutt!
I've been shooting the heavy guns since the Bi-Centenial and the early Caull pre-Baker guns soo, the difference in recoil after cutting the comp of was very negligable. Surprising to me but who'd a thunk eh? The general look of the gun IMO is vastly improved W/O the ugly compensator, I flat stole the idea from John Ross who has pics online.
http:john-ross.net i think.
I'm very happy with Hodgdon Longshot for the "midrange loads" from their webpage.
