22 hornet
« on: June 27, 2004, 03:54:46 PM »
My first trip to the range with the hornet with good brass and bullets , the 40 grain v-max using remington primers and imr 4227 I was getting consitant 5/8-3/4 inch 5 shot groups at 100 yards with conditions being not perfect (started with a haze and then a good breeze). I know I can do better I just need to work out the small flyers and I can get the groups I really want.
but it will do it

If the wind would have calmed down you probably would have shot a 5 shot group much smaller. Not too shabby..

the 22 hornets a shooter
My adult daughter shot my 22 hornet today , this was the first time she had ever fired a rifle of any kind, I myself was a handgunner until about 2 years ago  . She fired a total of about 60 rounds and had several 1 1/4 inch 5 shot groups at 100 yards from the bench ,I was sitting close by and coaching for the first 4-5 groups , I am not even finished working up loads for this rifle and the best so far is about 1/2 MOA

Be happy, my Ruger M77 in .22 Hornet will only shoot 1 1/2"@ 100 yds, in perfect conditions, and this only after free floating, glass bedding and lots of load workup. I think I need to get a .22 Hornet barrel for my Contender, but I was hesitant to do so after my experiences with the Ruger. Glad to hear the T/C barrels are better.

the hornet is a very finicky round , I have had success with the 40 grain v-max and 4227 powder . A freind of mine has had good results with the 33 grain tnt and lill gun powder with standard pistol primers . work in small incrememnts with this cartridge and neck size only .
