mitchell -

i have a few handi's and barrels now, see my first post. my wife gave up years ago trying to keep up with my toy acquisitions, i keep her happy and she let's me buy my toys, i'm just plain lucky she married me !

i will leave the choice of my next barrel to the general consensus. i like the 25-06 but the 7mm-08 sounds intriguing, so does the 450 marlin, but the 44 mag is no slouch either. i don't know, i can't make a decision.

maybe we should have a vote.

What about the .280? Both it and the 25-06 have the 26" barrels. I have the 25-06 and am quite happy with it (once I got all the bugs worked out) and Ditchdigger has the .280 and seems to be satisfied with his. Heck just get both of 'em
BTW did ya get these receivers from BBF? I notice ya don't have a .223 bull yet either, (great range shooters and killer on the varmints) well he just happens to have one for sale, might even lock right up to that receiver ya got real nicely

.223, .44 Mag, 7mm-08.    .223 for the cheap ammo available and as a long range varmit gun.   .44 Mag for the fun of shooting a pistol bullet out of a Handi and the added velocity and energy out of the longer barrel (and so easy to reload!!) and the 7mm-08 as a dandy deer gun....of course the .308 is nice but you have a 30-06 so don't need one, the 30-06 will do everything the .308 will do and more....<><....(lik2hunt is right about the .280, a real great caliber!!!)

sorry about that my mistake i read it wrong.  but in that case i would lean toward the 25-06 , the 7mm-08 and the 450marlin tell your wife its cheaper to buy bulk your going to have all of them some day anyway  :)  :) .  all joking aside i would go for the 25-06 that 26 inch barrel lets you squeak out the extra velocity, and the BC's are pretty good in a 257 caliber not quite as good as the 7mm but better then 308's and 243's (if bullet weight are equal) which would give you a good flat shooting wind bucking game killer.

OK...I'll go along with all the suggestions on the 25-06 and the 280...but lets not forget the 270 or the 308...both excellent cartridges too....AWWWW HECK...just get them all and be done with it  ...seriously you have some good ones already so it's just going to be iceing on the cake for you anyhow...a 223 would do nicely as well...here you got a little bit of a problem...the 7-08 is to the 280 as the 308 is to the 30-06...you would have to be the judge on that one...but since you already have an 06???

I'm going to get the 44 mag. next time. The 280 really impressed me with the 150 gr. Rem. green box stuff chronoed at 2975 fps. My 45 70 is fun for about 10 shots, and then it starts to hurt with the 300gr. Win.ammo.
When I get around to sending for the 44 mag barrel,if it does'nt shoot right I'm thinking rechamber to 445 super mag and try that. Digger

using the highly scientific method of counting the number of times each caliber was mentioned we have so far:

1st place - tie between 280 and 7mm-08

2nd place - tie between 44 mag, 25-06 and 308

3rd place - 223

4th place - tie between marlin 450 and 270

i think we need some more votes to spread the field out a it.

I would opt for the 223. As my wife's uncle puts it, if this country ever gets overrun or attacked, 5.56 mm ammo will be available.

ok like2 -

besides your stuffing of the ballot box, what kind of bugs did you have with the 25-06 ?

i can imagine that a small caliber with that huge case capacity may need a long barrel to burn any type of slow burning powder, such as one of the IMR's or similar. this would probably be a bad cast bullet choice too. i don't know, i have no experience with it at all using cast or jacketed bullets.

The problems I had were specific to my gun only I think. They have been corrected and I believe it will be a real shooter. I load with IMR 4350, but haven't really got to work on a load yet. I've loaded a few but haven't gotten to "hone" them yet. I don't have a chrony either, so I'd just be guessing at velocities. I am currently loading Sierra 117 gr. spitzers and will eventually load up some of their 75 gr HP and 87 gr. spitzers also. I'm not even considering a cast bullet for this one.

From your list i'd say your missing the 7mm class of rifles...

I am a big fan of short action cartridges because I feel they do the same as their longer action equivalents (i.e., .308 vs .30-06; 7mm-08 vs. .270).

My vote is on the 7mm-08.

In case this country is attacked there'll be plenty of .308's around too, that would be my second choice.

Good luck!

I'd consider a 26" 7mm-08. If you can't get that (you can't) then grab a 26" 280. It's high capacity for the bore size, but not as overbore as the 25-06.

Mitchell:
I did forget one thing when I agreed with the 7-08 guys. There's no way you will get a decent group with Hornady A-MAX in a 7-08 Handi, even if it did have a 26" barrel. It just won't spin the bullet fast enough to stabilize. Hornady recommends 1 in 8" twist, but 1 in 10 is acceptable at 3,000fps or higher.
For that reason, I'll stick with the 280, or the 280 Ackley Improved.
