7mm WSM, The New King????
« on: March 09, 2004, 01:05:04 PM »
Just got this.

Quote
From the March 2004 Precision Shooting, Jacob Gottfredson writes...

Tim Lambert competed in the unlimited benchrest class which includes rifles that shoot from rails and weigh as much as 250 pounds (pictured in article) and are sometimes made totally from metal with no conventional stock. Lambert did something a little different.

Lambert used an action taken from a $350 Savage bolt action rifle. He screwed a Hart barrel on it. Instead of using a fiberglass or steel stock, Lambert used a maple stock (not even laminated). Chambered it for 7mm WSM.

Lambert then proceeded to win the 2003 Heavy Gun 1000 Yard Group Championship.

A week later, Lambert won a Mile Long Competition setting a new World's Record of ten inches for five rounds at a mile.

With a Savage action and a plain wood stock!

Guess there IS something to the Savage accuracy fame and maybe Winchester WAS right about the accuracy of their WSM/WSSMline of cartridges.  Looks like the short/fat cartridges are going to be the in thing anyway.  Lawdog

Next time I line up a buck in my crosshairs at a mile away, I'll curse the fact I don't have a WSM or a Savage. Something tells me I'm not going to break any commandments on that account anytime soon, though! 8)

BS, The statement I made about the 7mm Mag. Savage ,is a big one coming from me,i'm not a Magnum guy,nor a modern cartridge guy,In all my rifles I've only got Two ,in modern cartridges one is the Savage and one .356win. in a 94 Winchester, all the rest are old timers.
The 7mm Rem. Mag. is just a great cartridge, and the Savage is one heck'ova rifle. In fact the Wildcat cartridge that i'm planning is goin to be built on a Savage action, for sure.

Hey Buckeye, Just a general statement, that is all. Not at you.

My buddy has a 110 7mag., using 175 cor-lokts it will shoot 3 inside an inch. Doesn't like much else though. Doesn't look fancy, but shoots good!

7mm WSM. New King???

I too like the ballistics of this new 7mm WSM. In fact i am going to buy one this summer as i am wanting a new deer rifle for the west end of michigans upper penninsula. I am looking at the Savage Model 11 gs with the synthetic stock. It will only be my second deer rifle as i am only 17 but i want something different than the rest of my hunting camp. My uncles, cousin, and dad all use the standard 308, 30-06, .44 mag and my dad uses a .35 Whelen.  I just want to be different i guess.  I have been currently using a Marlin 336 cs in .35 Remington which i am very satisfied with and have dropped 3 deer with using handloads.  One was a nice 8 point, the other 2 does.  Its just time for me to upgrade.  I too have seen some accurate savage rifles as my uncle's 308 is a Savage mdl 99 lever action, which is more accurate than his 30-06 Browning BAR.

Since I am a custom rifle builder I tend to be opinionated but I do not really see any need for more redundant cartridges any more then I see the need for a bunch of cartridges that fit between the .308 and the 3006.    True what gun you buy is not a matter of need but choice but these new short mags do nothing not already done but at a substantially lower pressure by an existing cartridge.    For example if you load a .300 Win mag to the short mag pressure you will blow the short mag into the weeds.   As for the short and light actions well if I wand a short fast handling deep woods rifle for the big stuff like Elk and Bear then I do not want a 7mm or a .30,  now neck these short mags to .338, .358, or .416, now you have something.    From my perspective, as they are, they are something new, a great sales campaign and nothing special which is not already done better by something else.
