I have seen that several of the custom barrel makers are now producing 500 SW barrels. Anyone have one or fired one yet?

Is an Encore necessary or can a Contender handle this round? With the other hand cannons out there is this round any stronger?

I spoke with a guy at the gun store a few weeks ago picking his .500 S&W reviolver. He had never shot a pistol before, and wanted to have this one for deer hunting. My guess it a like new gun will be on the market soon!

I think if you have done any research on the 500 S&W round you would know that it is not suitable for a Contender. 50,000 + psi with a casehead of that size?

It might be fun though to see how long the frame lasted though if you could find a barrel maker doofus enough to chamber one.
Of course it could be loaded way down but if you ever sold it how would you prevent the new buyer from dropping a Cor-Bon factory load in it?

I don't plan to buy one so I didn't investigate anything. I just asked and was answered.

The revolver for this round must be built well, or perhaps it will melt down like the .357 Max revolvers did.

Lets continue my education with this question: How does the taper of the case vs straight wall modify the pressures that make larger chamberings dangerous? I have little experience with the big ones like 45-70 so I can stand some enlightenment. I also am somewhat recoil averse so am not likely to own one. But I would like to know.

The .45/70 was origionaly a Black Powder number. In this case, at least, the taper is not what amkes it low pressure. The .45/70 can, and HAS, been loaded to much higher pressures, but for the Conyender all the literature I can find says to use the old BP equiv. pressures (i.e. Trapdoor rifle pressures.) Hope this helps a bit.

Keith L: We go on backthrust on the action. PSI times area of the case head equals backthrust. The larger the area the lower the PSI to keep backthrust to an acceptable level
Now on taper of the case. The cases that have minimum taper suppose to hold the chamber walls better which suppose to help alleviate some of the backthrust. The only problem is we don't know how much it helps as there is no way to put a figure on it.
Most plastic injection molds have some draft to even an apparent straight sided or parallel sided part so when the ejector pin pushes on the part even slightly the part releases from the cavity. Maybe this idea has some merit on tapered cases that the case may move even under pressure causing some extra backthrust on and action compared with a straight case.
Anyone have a better idea?
