Bullets for .22WM
« on: May 20, 2004, 06:22:53 AM »
The .17HMR has what looks to be a great little bullet similar to a Nosler Ballistic Tip.  Yes, I know that it is similar to Hornady's bullets that are in their centerfire varmint line, but I was wondering, doesn't anybody offer a similar high performance bullet in factory ammo in the 22WM?  If no, then why not?

Zachary,

Excellent question and one I would like the answer to.  I would think that the accuracy of the .22 WMR would be greatly improved with bullets like a 35(+/-) grain V-Max or Ballistic Tip.  Shouldn’t increase the cost that much either.  I have sent letters to CCI, Federal, Remington and Winchester asking if they were going to do just this - no answer yet.  Small groups and tight lines to you.  Lawdog

Apparently the ammo makers don't think there is a market for such loads.  My guess is that if they did they would have developed this before spending the R&D moneyon the .17HMR.  Any good business would try to fill what they see as a successful market niche.  And the ammo makers are good businesses.

I totally agree.  Hornady says how flat the .17HMR is to the .22WM, and I'm sure it is, however, they are comparing apples to oranges when they compare the sleek .17 bullet to the blunt shaped .22 bullet.  It's like comparing a bullet to a brick.

I'm sure that if the .22WM used the same bullet as the .17HMR, then the performance figures would no be so different.

There is a Pointed Polymer (Green) Tipped 22 Mag.
I think Remington produces it!
It is an awesome Bullet.  I have A bunch of them at home
It fires a 33 Gr V-Max bullet at 2000 fps Muzzle. I think it is called the "Premier" but I am not sure (I'm am not home at the moment.)
This Bullet will pulverize Garbage can raiders such as Opossums.
Do a search on them on the I-net You are sure to find some info!!!

I just reviewed these bullets and they seem pretty good.  They are not as areodynatic as the Hornady .17HMR bullet, but they're a lot better than the standard hollow points.

I still wish that someone, other than Remington, made a much more areodynatic and explosive bullet in .22WM.

You mean a nice boat tail Ballistic Tip form say CCI or Federal?  Even Winchester would be nice.  Lawdog

I agree!   If 22 mags were commonly available with better bullets and hotter loads, there would be a huge market for them and people would be buying these calibers over the tiny .17hmr

I have read recently that Aguilla was going to be introducing
some new loads for the .22 mag. One was called GOLIATH
and weighed in at .60 grains! There were a couple of lighter numbers
but I can't remember specifics.

Just curious, are any of the new bullets available in the 22 WM considered to be suitable for larger game such as coyotes, wild hogs, etc. or are the new bullets designed strickly for max expansion on small lightweight critters?

The old hollow point Winchesters in capable hands has put alot of meat in the freezer over the years.

With premium bullets, I know that people have taken coyotes with the 22WM, but not NEARLY as many as with the .22 caliber centerfires.  Even then, you need to be pretty darn close to shoot, and kill, a coyote with the 22WM.

As for hogs, I had an uncle that once killed a 200 pound hog with a .22LF and it dropped right in it's tracks.  How?  Well, the hog was about 15 yards away, and it was shot right in the head between its eyes.  Still, I would never advocate using a .22LF or even .22WM for hogs - there's just way too much margin for error.

.17 ammo vs. .22 wmr

I shot a .17 for the first time last week. It's a beautiful shooting gun but I believe the 22 Magnum is still a better caliber for squirrel hunting. The .17 seeme to be traveling so fast it explodes on impact. I like my squirrels for the dinner table and I "love" my .22 Mag.

My friend, a surgeon, used a 22 magnum for feral goats on the islands, he took only neck shots and back of the eye.Drops them like a sack of potatoes. The only reason he used rthe 22mag, was the goats have long thick hair, a 22  longrifle took many a blacktail buck. The whole thing is about knowing exactly where your shot is going and keeping shots uner 40 or 50 yards.

Those are actually Hornady V-MAX bullets in both the RP .22 Mag and the various .17 HRM loads. CCI is the ONLY company in the US manufacturing the .17 HRM ammo also. They load it with Hornady and Speer bullets and package it for whoever is buying them.

In the .22 Mag I still consider the old orginal 40 grain HPs superior to all others. In my rifle the Winchester is most acccurate. But that varies by gun.

Hey Guys,
I'm new to this BB, but have lurked for awhile. I have seen the Rem V-Max Boattails, but never tried them. I've also seen:

http://www.outlandsales.com/vmax.html

And I have not tried them. For those of you who have used the Rem's, how do they compare to CCI 40 gr HP?

I had Misfires with the box of Premier Remington's that I had about 9 out of the box.  :x  To me that was too much! Expecially at almost 12 bucks a box though I have heard they can be found cheaper. If I find a box of newer vintage of this ammo I might try it again. Jim

Yesterday, while at my local Gander Mt. store, I found the Rem Premier V-Max in 33 gr. for $9.99/50 rounds. I took them to the range to use to sight in my Charles Daly (Armscor built) 22WMR. I have a Tasco 3-12 X 40 scope (made in Japan) on it. I was pretty impressed with the Rem's as I was able to get around 1 1/4" groups at 100yds. One thing I found funny was that the Winchester 40 gr. (Not supreme's) shot at the same elevation, but about 4" to the left. I shot about 1/2 the box (couldn't stop!) and had no miss-fires.
