3200 problem
« on: May 24, 2004, 12:07:41 PM »
A week ago last Friday I received my two new Bushnell Elites.  One was an Elite 4200 4-16x40, ended up going on my No. 1V 25-06.  I sure was tickled to find that it came with a sunshade.  No problems with that one.  Seems like an excellent scope.  My next one was an Elite 3200 2-6x32 pistol scope.  I mounted this one on my Super Redhawk 44 mag.  This is my first pistol scope, so I was pretty excited to give it a try.  Well, on my first trip to the range I got five rounds through it and noticed after the 5th round I had some black thing floating around in my scope.  These weren't heavy loads either, 240gr XTP @ approx 1400fps.    I spoke with someone in Customer Service to see if they could pay for the shipping to get it to them to repair it, since I didn't even have it for a week, but he said they don't do that.  So now after waiting 3 weeks to get my new scope, I not only have to send it back to the factory for repair, I have to pay to get it there  :( .  I guess I was just wondering if anybody else has had any problems like this with their Elites.

My gosh!  I have never had any problems with any of my Elites, both 4200 and 3200s.  In fact, I have an Elite 3200 1.5x-4.5x-32mm mounted on my .375H&H Mag and it has held up perfectly with absolutely no problems.

Obviously, that's not to say that these scopes are perfect, but I sure am surprised that you had a problem.

Why didn't you take it back to the store where you bought it?  Maybe you could have returned it and then bought another one.

I wouldn't condemn the whole line because you got a defective one.  That happens.  It's happened to me with quality scopes, expensive rifles, etc.  I work for a towing and recovery service, and I see brand new, very expensive cars break down every day.  Most of them are fine, but occasionaly one will be sold that has some sort of defect.  It's a fact of life.  If they have a reputation for having problems, that's different.  But I've not generally heard bad things about the Elites.

As far as paying for the shipping, it's been my experience that most manufacturers don't do that unless you raise hell, and even then many won't.  I sent the trigger of my Mini14 to ASI for a trigger job.  They botched it up.  I had to pay to send it back to them again.  They didn't charge me for the warranty work, but after waiting another six weeks (they promised me two weeks), it came back in the same terrible condition.  So I payed for the cost of the trigger job ($65), shipping twice, waited a total of 3 1/2 months, and ended up with a trigger that still needs a trigger job.

I'm sure Bushnell will take care of your scope when they get it.  By the way, how is the brightness/clarity in your 4200?

I can tell you that there is a noticeable difference between the 4200 and 3200.  Not only is the 4200 brighter, but also sharper than the 3200.  That's not to say that the 3200 isn't good - it's just to say that the 4200 is noticeably better.

Think of it this way....light transmission for the 3200 is about 88%.  For the 4200 its 95%.  My eye can definately notice the difference in light transmission.  The optic's resolution is similarly noticeable.

Actually, I have spoken with so many representatives, and read so much literature, that I honestly can't remember, or at least pinpont, how I know that the light transmission for the 3200 is 88% (which is the same for the buckmaster).

Still, trust me, it's about 88%.

If you bought it locally I would return it there for a new one.  Almost everyplace has a 30 day return policy.

Unfortunately, I ordered it online.  I gave them a call and returning it isn't an option.  I didn't mean to be bad-mouthing the entire line, I was just curious if anyone else had had a similar problem.  It's discouraging to spend this kind of money on a product just to turn around to spend another $5-$10 to ship it back to them for a repair.

As far as the 4200 goes, I'm really pleased with it.  I can't wait to get out and pop some sod poodle with that rig.  It was a clear and sunny day when I had it at the range, so it wasn't really a good test of it's brightness.  Next time out I'm going to take along my 6.5-20 Vari-XIII for a side-by-side comparison.

I do plan on buying more Bushnell products in the future, I'm just a little disappointed this time around.
