Mauser 98 threads?
« on: July 09, 2004, 06:40:37 PM »
Guys,
I'm hoping to replace the barrel on my ZG47 with a Lothar-Walther prechambered/prethreaded barrel in 8x68S. Question is: Lothar will supply a finished barrel for a Mauser 98 action but are all Mauser 98 actions threaded identically? My ZG47 is a 1957 action, would this be identically threaded to a more modern Mauser 98 action like a CZ550??
Thanks for any help...

Mauser 98 threads?

Not all 98's were threaded the same. The large ring 98's were threaded the same(1.10 inches) and the small rings were threaded the same(.980 inches) BUT there were 98's made with small receiver rings and with large rings but threaded like a small ring. This last was mainly for the Turks who having a large quantity of small ring barrels wanted to be able to use the replacement barrels on either the newly purchased 98's or the older 93' etc. There is also the possibility that the receiver threads were damaged and it's been oversized. I found this on a 95 and was forced to custom cut the barrel threads. So, the answer is usually. The solution is to pull the barrel and measure the threads. They most likely will be of a normal size. As to the CZ550 I don't know as I haven't had a cause to rebarrel any yet.
